So, here's my current top. 39 and a quick review aswell:
01.
Moldova
A very good example of where native language should be used instead of English. The English version of this sounded like a bad take at a musical ballad, with dreadful lyrics and dreadful pronunciation, which made it all sound cheesy... however in its Romanian version it was like the beauty of this song finally was able to shine through.
02.
Sweden
Now some of you may think I'm biased or something, but then you know me too little because I don't judge songs based on the countries (including my own), but thing is that we once again send a respectable contemporary pop song. The 10's have been a good decade for Sweden so far. And no, don't compare this to Eric Saade please, this is way more interesting and grown-up!
03.
Iceland
When some people compare this song to former ESC entrlies like "Butterflies" then I don't know where to start? This is a cute (without being cheesy) but most of all genuine and well-sung ballad with folk influences and in a language that we have not heard in ESC since 1997 and which adds alot of beauty to the song. One of Iceland's best entries ever.
04.
Israel
Israel is one of my all-time fav ESC countries and while they haven't been as consistent in the 00's/10's they are atleast back on form with this one. A dramatic (without being pretentious and kitschy) melancholic ballad in a very native style. Somehow I think of "Molitva" when I hear this, but have to remind myself that I never really liked that song but I like this. Strange huh?
05.
Macedonia
While I initially preferred the more "direct" "Imperija" over this I've come to terms and realized this is a much more serious song. Some people have called it unfinished and mis-matched... but I actually like what I hear and I even like the mis-matching in this.
06.
Denmark
I can see why this is a pre-favorite, it's an instant catchy song but just like with Rybak back in 2009 I find it perhaps a bit too catchy (does that even make sense?). Some people have unfairly compared this to the masterpiece "Horehronie", while I would instead describe it as if Soluna May decided to make a poppier version of Katy Satyn's "Magican Sensation" (Belgian pre-selection 2008) and in the same time making out with Alexander Rybak's "Fairytale" (but throwing out the violin in favor of the flute instead). More celtic than Scandinavian.
07.
Ireland
Alot of people seem to dislike this while I personally find it one of Ireland's stronger entries of the past decades or so. It's hardly something ground-breaking, but it feels up-to-date and a pretty decent contemporary dance-club-pop song. One of this year's most contemporary entries.
08.
Montenegro
... speaking of contemporary... have ESC ever sounded as up-to-date as this one? Montenegro is going all in this year and send their best (and perhaps only good?) entry to date. This is very risky because it has no typical ESC formula written on it what-so-ever. Is ESC ready for 2013?
09.
Serbia
My initial reaction to this was "meh", but I have to eat up my words. Nothing ground-breaking but actually quite catchy and surprisingly "interesting" for being a simple pop-dance song with a typical "ESC" stamp on it.
10.
Azerbaijan
Quite formulaic ESC pop-ballad, but still strong with a good hook. This is sort of a better version's of Koldun's "Work Your Magic". But it does get boring with Azerbaijan always relying on other countries when it comes to this though.
11.
Ukraine
This could very well fail, like a theme from the Lion King mixed with Celine Dion... but somehow the structure of this song keeps it interesting enough to make it stand out from other ballads(?) in the contest and without making it cheesy.
12.
Croatia
I wasn't fond of the Klapa idea and I would have preferred something more poppy/uptempo instead then (like "Provjelce" from the Croatian selection 2005). But the song is quite ok, although a tad dated (sounds like something Croatia or Bosnia would have sent in the 90's). It's cute but a little boring but a plus for its being genuine, true and in native language!
13.
Bulgaria
Ok ok, it's no "Voda" but then again this is not 2007. I think the too dragged-out drum instrumentation part in the end is what takes away from the overall impression of this. Kudos to going ethno (without pop compromises!) on us but it's also risky.
14.
Cyprus
15.
Estonia
A try at re-creating the 90's Estonian ballads? It's alright but it's not even close to doing that.
16.
Switzerland
Instantly catchy but also gets boring quickly. The melody is a bit too simplistic and monotone for my taste. This is scouts sitting around a camp-fire singing. It should deserve a spot in the final though.
17.
Germany
No, this has nothing to do with "Euphoria" other than perhaps being in a similar genre. Typical Cascada. Not bad but not good either.
18.
Norway
Robyn's electro-pop meets Björk's weirdness meats industrial pop. On paper it all looks interesting but somehow I'm not too fond of the execution of it.
19.
Slovenia
20.
Italy
Tactically a smart choice from Rai to pick the Sanremo winner and a song that has become a native hit with a current popular artist, Italy need to boost interest for ESC badly. However the song itself is rather boring isn't it? Perhaps a grower.
21.
Belgium
22.
San Marino
Alot of people love this, I however find it a bit too formulaic.
23.
France
This is one of those that could be good but leaves me rather cold. I miss some melody here.
24.
Netherlands
Ok this is a pre-favorite, but beware... this could flop in the televoting leaving it mid-place. What I like with this entry is more the idea than the actual entry (if that makes sense?). The song itself is rather... boring?
25.
Belarus
It's totally beyond me how people can compare this to the fabulous "Wild Dances"? People should get some ears. This is extremely static and fake, it's uptempo but it has no life in it.
26.
Romania
Alot of people think this is the worst song this year, well I can't really agree on that. I can't say I like it much but it's hardly the worst entry this year. I'm no fan of opera, especially pop-opera... but there are far weaker and less interesting songs though and atleast it has SOMETHING catchy in it.
27.
Georgia
Alot of people compared this to "Running Scared", I guess all it takes is a male/female duo singing a Swedish-made ballad for such comparisons to be made. While I wasn't a big fan of "Running Scared" it felt atleast more up-to-date and a bit with a better hook. This is just cheesy and dated and I had to listen to it many times to even recall it. It's not the worst of its kind this year, but it's definitely a song that doesn't deserve any of the success some people predict it'll get.
28.
Greece
On paper I should like this right? It's ethno-influenced, it's in native language. But nah... I was never a big fan of the ska genre (which is a very hit-or-miss for me) and sadly this comes across as more of a novelty act than a serious song in my ears. I don't draw comparisons song-wise (because they differ) but to me this is this year's
Can Bonomo, which imo was last year's ethno-influenced novelty act.
29.
Hungary
I guess this is one of those entries I want to like but I just can't. I applaud them for keeping it in Hungarian and sending something a bit alternative, but it's just too boring for me.
30.
Austria
31.
Latvia
32.
Spain
Please bring Lucia Perez or Susanne Georgi back to ESC! This entry is so boring. I like the celtic influences and that it's sung in Spanish, but the song itself is just so boring! Hook? Melody? Something interesting? No... Spain should prepare themselves for a last spot in the final I'm afraid.
33.
Lithuania
34.
United Kingdom
"Total Eclipse of the Heart" is one of the best ballads ever made, this however is a complete anonymous nonsense? Alot of people were hard on the Humperdinck last year, but that entry is miles above this boring balld.
35.
Albania
After the fabulous "Suus" I feel a bit sad with a comeback. A quite boring rock song with no actual hook or melody
36.
Finland
If the only good part in a song is "a la lading dong" (or whatever she sings?) and the rest is just some juvenile-lack of a decent hook-Disney pop/Katy Perry left-over demo then we got problems! Awful!
37.
Russia
This is probably Russia's worst entry to date, it's beyond me why a country like Russia need to rely on Swedish-penned American wannabe cheese... I thought they didn't even like the USA so why send something that comes straight out of the rejects for American Idol's winning-songs? This is so anti-intellectual I don't know where to begin, and I don't mean to sound pretentious... I can totally like some silly, cute, fun, catchy and even bit kitschy song... but this is just kitsch cheese without a soul, without substance, without being tongue-in-cheese... this believes it's something it is not. This is this years' "C'est ma vie"... I feel emotionally raped by this relic cheese and it's only in ESC that such craps are allowed to stay alive... jury-wank of 2013? For the sake of music and ESC please let it not be!
38.
Malta
Unmelodic singer-songwriter cheese. While I expect more from countries like Russia in ESC I just can't become as angry at Malta for sending this because I got used to it by now. Atleast their last entry was catchy, this is just nothing.
39.
Armenia
Minus their debut entry Armenia started to become one of my favorite ESC countries with strong etho-pop entries... then came Emmy and "Boom boom shaka laka". But I thought that the withdrawal would lead to a strong comeback, but we end up with a big fat ZERO of an entry. This is just lame in all aspects and it would be a shame if the juries (oh but he's got good live vocals so let's grade him high shall we regardless of the song being crap?) and the diaspora (Armenian entry? Ok let's vote even if we don't like the song) would put this nonsense of an entry in the final taking the place from something more worthy.
