I thought people were exaggerating when they said that the song will need modifications in the lyrics but I see that it's indeed gonna have to go through some changes. And like some others I also think that's an overkill. How about words that sound like something potentially inoffensive in languages other than English and people getting offended over that? That could be endless

No, it won't be endless.

If you sing a whole song in a foreign language and one song happens to sounds like a curse word, it's a funny coincidence.
If you sing a whole song entirely in English but you chose to drop a single word in a foreign language which sounds exactly like one of the most offensive curse words in English you've the intention to use it as a pun/to provoke, e.g.
"dick" in German means "big/fat".
Imagine German submitting a song titled: "Sucking dick (fat)". Of course, it's not a glorious comeback for the German language at ESC, it's a way to use curse words which clearly are against the EBU guidelines/rules.

What's the point of Malta singing "I'm serving singing???" - She's clearly not serving vocals - "singing" as a gerund form?

Eurovision can be sexy, thought-provking but there should be a line - making use of an isolated word in a foreign langauge (which doesn't make sense in the lyrics at all) to repeat a very offensive curse word in English all over again is THAT LINE.

Kinda puzzles me that some people don’t get why it’s a problem.

If the whole chorus was in Maltese, the use of Kant wouldn’t stick out like a sore thumb and might have snuck under the radar. But Miriana isn’t that clever clearly - or her songwriters for that matter.

Making it as obvious as a punch in the face with glitter on top that you want to use a word that sounds like a highly offensive swear word is certainly one of the dumbest choices a country has made for its entry in recent years.

There's a difference between foreign words meaning something entirely differently in another language, popping up only once and using "Kant" like 20 times throughout a song as the only Maltese word to replace the same-sounding English "C*nt".
What should "I'm serving singing" actually mean? "Kant" has been used to mean "C*nt" in an English song.

Personally, I think that Zorra should have also been changed last year (I advocated for it in last year's Spanish thread) but the difference is that a broadcast officially complained about "Kant".

Thats also the difference between Russia and Israel there's no "arbitrary choices". No broadcaster officially filed a complaint to the EBU about the Israeli delegation and whilst some broadcasters demanded questions to be answered, they didn't boycott KAN or demanded them to be banned for an edition - whilst several broadcasters officially demanded Russia to be banned.

Dunno, maybe Malta was just very unlucky because now some broadcasters complained about the song.

So if not for many other countries openly demanding Russia to get banned ... we'd have Russia at the ESC now? Am I getting this right?

Yeah, now I can understand it better. Somehow the full picture escape my mind and I guess I was lucky enough not to hear/read cunt much as a curse words but I knew what the word means in English.

The best edit for the song:
Just change to "Serving [insert cupcakke moan]"

EBU will have to engage the anti-kant technology on the audience anyway.

They could sing the entire line in Maltese (blabla bla kant) or just change the kant with another gimmicky word, I think that they had a back-up option knowing that it could lead to this issue?

You just know the EBU will cave in and allow Malta to say "KANT" after all.

"The broadcaster according to TVM News argues that the EBU is censoring and discriminatory to the Maltese language"

GIVE. ME. A. BREAK!

There is no way they actually believe that :ROFLMAO:
If the EBU fall for this, they are even bigger suckers then I gave them credit for!

Apparently it was confirmed on BBC Radio 4 that the BBC didn’t complain - the digging continues!

Maybe Australia? I think it has to be some country where English as it official language?

I'm not a huge fan of this song but how ridiculous is the EBU for censoring the word... We were allowed last year to send a song which literally meant 'Slut', but 'Kant' isn't allowed???? I have no words.

Kant is way more inappropriate than slut though.

It’s on par with F*ck and SH!t which all would and have been censored when used.

Easiest solution to prove them wrong: She should sing the whole line - or better the whole song - im Maltese. No one will have a problem with it. And it would elevate the song even because the lyrics are so stupid and meaningless that it‘s better not to understand them. Malta refusing such a proposal would mean they themselves are discriminating against the maltese language.

In the end everyone should be happy with that: You sing in maltese, you sing about a song. you don’t need to change that word which apparently is so important for you.
Well perhaps those who want to misuse the ESC stage just to impose their vulgarity on others will be disappointed though.

PS: and please get her a better outfit. This one‘s hidious!

Apparently, Miriana Conte has re-named her song to "Conte".

She won't be saying her family name, though - "Kant" will probably be replaced by a sound - "Conte" will just function as a placebo song title.

I guess they really wanna make the arena shouting "Kant".

The Times of Malta reports that Miriana Conte’s entry for the Eurovision Song Contest has a new title. According to sources close to the Maltese delegation, “Kant” is due to be changed to “Conte”, the surname of the Maltese representative Miriana Conte. In addition, “Kant” within the songs lyrics will not be replaced by a new lyric, but instead is expected to be replaced by a sound.

If the EBU actually approve that then they really are suckers, they might as well have just let her sing Kant...
