Watching it again today my respect is only increasing. The song was already my favourite, but just look at how it's sold. That staging is so sickeningly good it really blows my socks off. And my pants.
I don't understand it, every act is given the same stage. It's really good at creating big expansive effects, much like last year. Some songs don't need that, some songs want to pretty much deny the stage even, but most songs really need to turn that stage into an advantage. I have been very surprised that up till now, pretty much no one really 'got' what the stage could do. Most acts rely on the backdrop screen to get some atmospheric visuals going, a tactic that is both easy and effective, but there have not been a lot of acts that combined this in a highly effective way with the rest of the stage. I felt Georgia did this particularly well on Tuesday, essentially using the many effects to make the backdrop look like it was 3D. Very nice. But what Latvia did here is simply magnificent. This is what the Vienna stage can do and this is the first time we're even seeing it. Such a shame, but I'm glad that Latvia is the one act that did 'get it'. Awesome.
