Over the past week-odd, I've seen Molly's Game, All the Money in the World, The Post, Mudbound, and Darkest Hour. Mudbound is the clear standout of the bunch (my #2 film of the year of what I've seen), but I also really enjoyed Molly's Game and The Post! :)

I went to Day 1 of a "Best Picture Showcase," which featured two films I had yet to see: Phantom Thread and The Shape of Water. I preferred the one about the creepy, monstrous creature who falls in love with a human woman, but The Shape of Water was good, too.

I finally came to watch the highly acclaimed Sci-Fi movie "Arrival".

I like that's a different kind of alien movie. No human-like or disgusting-looking,aggressive aliens that wanna dstroy the human race and for some reason know our language...the aliens here look very different and you can't even see them in detail. That's much more legit for me
I also like thats not a "we against them" scenario but a slow and careful approach to the other species. Since I am interested in linguistics I obviously love the linguistical approach, I love to see the strategies of Dr. Banks to get in touch with the aliens. I also find the logographical concept of the aliens language very very interesting.
It's a pity we dont see a lot of how the language acquisition works. At one point the research team have a list of hundred of words and a software that can recognize the words. The movie is very intelligent and the whole "the time is not linear" thing is something I like to think about... however, I was never convinced by the Sapir Whorf theory and I can't see how the acquisition of language could ever have such an effect as it has on Dr. Banks in the movie. What also confused me is how passive the aliens behaved...wouldnt it be their job to understand our language to communicate with us? Why in those movies it's always the human who contact the "strangers". I would love to see a movie about aliens who meet human and try to understand them xcrazy
Last but not least the soundtrack blew me away. They used Richter's "On the natury of daylight" both at the beginning and the final scenes of the movie. This song is achingly beautiful and makes me emotional. The other pieces in the movie were made by Jóhann Jóhannsson. The score he made is very experimental, mysterious and threatening at the same time. At some parts, it is very amazing.

In total I would give this movie 6,5/10 points. I dont think it's as good as it's considered but it's still a special and original movie and refreshing compared to other alien movies.

Spanish horror film based on "true events" that took place in Vallecas (Madrid) in 1991. In the last weeks I saw many posts in Facebook telling how horrifying it was, challenging people to watch it, etc. Someone even said it was better than The Conjuring! Of course, as a huge fan of horror films (and super fan of The Conjuring), I couldn't miss it. My verdict: it's ok, entertaining, but it's not scary at all (I'd say sometimes it is ridiculous) and I wonder how someone can find this is better than the film about the Warren (one of the best movies of this genre that has been released in the last decade imo).

Just watched "The big sick". An intercultural comedy between an American woman and an Indian man, based on a real story. Absolutely worth watching! The main actor is also the man to whom it happened. :)

Can't believe I still had to watch this film. I thought I wouldn't like it because I don't usually find dolls, clowns and such scary enough (Annabelle is an exception), but I've liked it very much. However, I'm not exactly satisfied with the end, as on the one hand I love how the story makes an importance change in the last minutes, but on the other hand I always like to know a bit what happens next and tbh there is something I don't understand (doesn't make logic to me). I guess this ending is made for a sequel, but as far as I know The Boy doesn't have a second part (perhaps it didn't have the success they expected?)

And it also features Elliott Smith references so therefor is worlds best movie until I produce and direct my own full feature length, Confessions of a Very Melancholic Elliott Smith Fan, starring Tommy Wiseau as me, and Mikal Cronin as the ghost of Elliott Smith.
