Correct me if I'm wrong but I was under the impression the "honor" goes to a song that is considered highly popular that flopped when it counted. I thought qualification wasn't really a factor here. If that's the case then yes, Germany obviously wouldn't apply

It was always applied to the countries that were fan favourites to qualify, but failed (like Switzerland in 2007-2008, Slovakia 2010, Sweden 2010 - this one is Berghendalized as well , Norway 2011 ??, Slovenia 2012). At least that's the vibe I used to get over the years.

Norway...I can't really say why, it DOES every single thing I could like in a pop song, and yet...somehow, doesn't seem as a "winner" to me.

The Netherlands is another one. I liked...OK, but to some members of my family that know about Eurovision but are more casual fans than hardcore (like me XD ) keep saying that sound very bland and boring.
