This thread often seems a bit pointless. It's just a case of selecting all the favourites and saying that they will fail. The only one I can think of is San Marino, only because the fans rate it massively, and I can't see it getting anywhere near winning. But I think the rest are favourites for a reason, and I think they will all do well.

I am still waiting for someone to explain why Denmark's role as a 'favourite' should be justified. There's no broader appeal, except to hardcore fans, same as with San Marino, so why should not it be considered a Katy Ryan contender? :?

I refuse to see a Margaret/Emmelie against Valentina scenario. They are all my favourites this year. The Dutch have high hopes on a well deserved good place, unfortunately I fear the average European TV audience will look elsewhere. Valentina is more of a dark horse BMO and both Margaret and Emmelie will at least get decent places. It's the pretentious ballads that are the ones in danger.

Many songs that have been highly appreciated amongst the ESC fans and then have failed to impress the general televoter and the juries have been up-tempo/schlager:
Tooji/Stay did quite well in the OGAE polls last year (and we know what happened to him).
Charlotte Perelli/Hero just barely qualified.
Kate Ryan/Je t'adore.
Paolo/Era Stupendo (at least the last part was more up-tempo)

Why Tooji did so poorly is still a mystery to me (I voted for him). He kind of ruined any sympathy by speaking rubbish right afterwards though. :D

I think the only countries eligible for the Kate Ryan award are Denmark, Norway, Germany and the Netherlands. Each favoured by the majority of fans and expected to do very well judging by betting odds. San Marino is a fan favouritexbow but it's hard to say what will happen with it. Valentina is fighting an uphill struggle to begin with.

All four of the countries I mentioned previously above in one way or another smell of Kate Ryan. Norway's song is very noisy and harsh which could put people off. Germany's entry sounds like it's from 10 years ago. The Dutch song doesn't "go" anywhere... but I think the country with the biggest chance of winning the award is Denmark. I'm getting Slovakia 2010 vibes from it.

It's more than likely that at least one of these countries is going to flop like a fish.

The Norwegian song isn't noisy unless the person turns their volume up, also how does the German song sound like something from 10 years ago, when the San Marino song sounds like something from 1970

No one has to explain it. It is winning all the fan polls and is currently the bookies favourite to win. You say it has no broader appeal, but that is pure opinion and speculation on your part. The current facts are that it is the favourite to win. Whether that comes to pass is another question entirely, but at the moment It is indeed the favourite.

But the Norwegian song is a noisy electro pop song. It has quite harsh, imposing synths. It's not an insult. A lot of people will be instantly put off by the droning synths.

Ah the 1970's... such a classy, timeless period. Can't say the same thing for the music of about ten years ago:rolleyes:

San Marino, Norway & Germany are easily coming to mind here.

I still strongly believe Norway will get only televotes from Finland & Iceland in their semi but what do i know:D

Gosh, just because Denmark, Norway and Germany are favourites doesn't mean they will flop. In my opinion this years Kate Ryan will be San Marino! I don't see the appeal, juries may like it but the televoters will push it way down the list.

Yes, I fear Norway doesn't have a "paneuropean" appeal... I think it will be high in northern-western countries and not elsewhere... I can't see Armenia voting Margaret Berger... I can't see my country voting that either... I expect Germany to top the televoting and Italy the jury... Italy may have our 12...

What did he said?

I don't remember, but it wasn't as bad as Danny S though. It smashed (or flashed? :D) the Norwegian tabloid VG big time. There are probably some comments about it in the end of the Norwegian 2012 thread. :) Essentially he was cocky and wouldn't accept a defeat, probably in chock after the ESC bubble-crack.

Well, everything becomes easy with an exclusive view on matters, but probably rather one-sided, biased and monotonous. I mean even electro pop songs or metal opera can give some unique amazing mind-blowing experiences. It's just to keep ones ear open (no offense intended). :)

Hmmm I would say Germany, but I like the song :/ I think that Netherlands will qualify, but it's a bit hard to predict (maybe it could do France 2009?)

I think that Denmark and Norway will qualify without any problems and do at least ok
