Is it time to abolish the big 5?

The Big 5 status is a poisoned chalice. But if countries like the UK and France are happy to pay to do badly in a final than try their luck in the semis and only make the final when they deserve to, by all means go ahead ^^

I have no problems with the Big5, if Germany won in 2010, then anyone in the Big5 can win.

It's just a matter of song ! Italy proved us again this year a Big5 country can get a great rank.

The UK just need to take this contest a little more seriously and France need to send something else than boring and elitist songs.

Although extremely unfair, the "Big" countries will probably never lose their auto spot in the final. Money is all that matters to EBU. In fact, I find it pretty ridiculous that they promote ESC as something democratic, and yet they break many principles of a democracy, and it doesn't only apply to the "Big" countries situation.

They all got pretty much what they deserved. Solid songs, but honestly nothing that stands out. Germany has a win + two top-10 finishes in the past six years, Spain has two 10th positions. France and UK have not been doing that well, but they can only blame themselves for that. We have seen very succesful pre-qualified songs recently, so that is clearly not the reason. Send some good songs!

I think that Big 5 have to perform in the semis too, as a "presentation" to the public.

About the final chart: this year, except for :fr:, the other Big 5 deserved their placement. They have to pick better entries (poor :de:, they did it but...) for this show, that's all.

There are different problems in every nation: :uk: trolls the contest, :es: made a terrible over the top staging for this swedish song, :de: has no fault, honestly. :fr: robbed but they have to stop on sending random acts on the stage.

Having to go through qualification might make those countries treat their participation in the contest with more respect, but most of them actually do that already.

:de: They had a big (?) open selection. Not really their fault they failed. Massively underrated entry in my opinion.
:es: Big name (right?) with a fancy song from foreign writers/producers. Again, not really their fault, they tried.
:it: Big name, came through respected Sanremo contest. Almost won ESC.

:fr: and :uk: Only abusers of their status in the recent years. I think they just chose the first artists who were willing to do it for free.

It's always been time to abolish the big5+1.
But it's especially true if the contest grows with new countries and we may need to have a third semifinal.

I don't think it'll happen, money talks but to be honest it might give some of them a kick in the arse to pick better entries.

I say let them stay PQ if they want to, but I think it's hurting themselves in the long run, not getting the same exposure as the countries competing in the SFs.

No, but let them perform in the semifinals. Get rid of those useless interval acts and take the PQ countries performing in the semifinals.

The bottom four consisted of all pre qualified entries. Spain also did not do well. Does this mean it's time to make the big 5 perform in semi finals and have to qualify? Or at least perform on stage during the voting?

This is the same point I made a few days ago

I think it is a disadvantage to be a pre-qualifier so the only way to make it fair if they keep the PQs then they should get the chance to perform twice too

I'll admit that I was initially convinced that being PQ is a huge disadvantage, but is it really?

1. Looking at the TV ratings the final has far more viewers, so a lot of the viewers (in some countries the majority) have not seen any of the acts until the final.
2. Italy just had the best televoting result ever, even though they were PQ. Lena did quite well also.
3. I think it would simply be weird to have them perform just to kill some time. Longer snippets of their official videos would be just fine.

i totally agree with LoveHate
Italy was the televote's winner, seems that PQ or not it didn't had any effect on people at home. Maybe on the juries i don't know.
I don't think being PQ is the reason of bad songs, i just think they don't understand what europe wants yet. In case of France (which is the one i know the best) the HoD said after the ESC2015 "i didn't know the show was modern now, i was shocked". The problems are from the leading persons of these countries, nothing more nothing less.

They won't abolish it.

If they were to get rid of the big 5, France would straight up withdraw. Let them send their boring songs and occupy a bottom space. France bring in loads of viewers and money

The UK on the other hand would finally up their game, the semis are quite popular considering they are on BBC3. Germany & Italy would be fine considering they take it quite seriously.

Spain I haven't the foggiest idea

This is the best solution.

Host + 3 of the Big 5 perform in one semi, host + 2 of the Big 5 perform in the other.

All people are talking how bad the juries are. I think they are fine and needed!!!

Big 5 is really unfair!! Why should Italy and the rest be pre-qualified????

I think the idea that top 5 from previous contest would be way more fair. At least those countries have earn their places. I also think the quality of big 5 entries would be better if they need to qualify from semifinal. Now it is like they aren't really put any effort in their entries because they know they are pre-qualified.

People seems to think the big 5 are some almighty Gods which aren't.

How much favour should they get???? That's totally unfair that they are allowed to perform in semis without competing.

I'm totally sick of Big 5 arrogant attitude.
