Depends how they do the song rating I suppose. In theory having more people with varied tastes should be a good thing, but if they keep the 1-5 rating for each song, the more daring choices can easily be buried by several 1s from more mainstream juries. Perhaps they could introduce some kind of weight system for the votes, where being someone's favorite/top 3 gives an added bonus? Giving any single jury member a little more power to push their favorites? I guess we'll have to wait and see if the number of juries is the only change they'll be making to the pre-selection or not. :giggle:

Having a larger jury inevitably means that each juror has less individual power. The goal is to root out any dissent.

I suppose that also means a single jury member or two slapping a song with 1 will have less effect. Of course that still requires said song to be reasonably popular with several other jury members.. but in theory, a couple of vehemently anti-alternative people will no longer be enough to sink a song completely. In Eurovision itself, everyone is always complaining about the small size of the jury & how it needs to be bigger. But yeah, a lot will come down to fine details, who they have in the jury & what the rating system will be. Last year they actually had all jury members pick their two biggest favorites along with the usual ratings, so maybe they took it into account somehow? If so, I hope they keep that.

In some article, Killandi was also talking about involving their media platforms more & bringing more new music to people. Could just be general fluff talk, or perhaps they are planning some manner of online vote or something? Could be an interesting idea, with the juries picking most of the songs but then people getting to vote online for a couple or wildcards or something. I rather doubt they'd put all 200+ songs online if they did that, but maybe a certain selection? But any kind of online vote would be rife with spamming & cheating. And some artists might prefer not to have their songs published if they don't make the cut, so they can send it again next year and year after that. Anyway, we'll probably have to wait a while yet for the full rules, since they're still really busy writing them.

ngl Estonia would benefit from euro-fandom voting as well.

Correct. Pre-jury will select:
5 songs directly to the grand final (17th February in Tallinn)
15 songs to compete for remaining 5 spots in a semifinal (20th January in Tartu)

Deadline for submissions: 23rd October
Selection announced early November
Songs released early December

Well, I guess I can see why they went with that choice. If you have to cut down one semi for financial reasons, but still want to include 20 songs, there aren't too many options I suppose. I guess you could have a marathon semi with all 20 songs, but that would be a very long evening. Also one might argue why even have a semi then, just have a 20 song final! Which I guess could also be an option. Maybe we'll see that some other year, if the direct finalist system doesn't appeal to people. But perhaps they'll be able to bring back two semis again, seems like the most tried and tested option that worked well so far. :giggle:

I can definitely see there being plenty of grumbling about the 5 songs that get the final ticket not being worth it. Unless we get lucky and those really are the best songs of the bunch, but even then, so many different tastes out there. Everyone will probably have their own favorites they'd rather see in the final! Oh well, we shall have to hope the jury picks at least end up being above average & competitive/interesting. Worst case scenario is getting 5 bland radio filler songs direct in the final. But we won't know that until later. It'll be interesting to see what the jury top 5 is I guess. Would be very curious to know what the pre-selection jury top 5 has been in previous years and which songs would have made the cut with this new system. But don't think such info has ever been revealed. Would Alika and Ollie and Bedwetters have gotten a final ticket? Or had to tough it out in the super-semi? Going to be a competitive evening, with 10 songs getting the boot at once!

Rest of the rules seem pretty similar to before. Still two voting rounds in semi & final. I guess 4+1 in the semi? Could be 3+2 too, if they want to give televoters more power now that jury get to pick 5 direct finalists. :giggle: No mention if superfinal will still have 3 songs or not. Jury in the semi will also be extra large.. wonder if they plan to get all new 35+ people or have the same jury as the pre-selection one. Final still seems to have international jury.

Well, here's hoping for a strong selection of songs! And that the best ones get to make the cut. :giggle: They actually plan to release/introduce some songs that didn't make top 20 this time around. Will be interesting to see if we get any hidden gems that didn't make it! And the ensuing complaining when that inevitably happens. At least the ones that don't make the final directly still have a chance to pass the semi. Or maybe they'll be sneaky and release some duds so people will go "wow, they really picked the best songs after all!". Looking forward to November in any case. :giggle:

It's a small number but anyone that follows Eesti Laul yearly would know the majority of the songs are sent at the last minute. Especially in the case of the bigger artist who are polishing their entry until the deadline. They'll still get over 150-175+ entries submitted I'd suspect.

Someone commented on this post about whether it's possible for Kerli to return to Eesti laul! And she gave an interesting response.

The organizers of Eesti Laul have received 215 songs, 20 of which will be selected by a representative jury to advance to the main competition.

"A total of 215 songs were submitted for this year's competition, 88 of them in Estonian and 127 in foreign languages. One of the foreign language songs is in Italian, the remaining 126 are in English."

"The jury selects 20 songs from the preliminary round, of which five songs go directly to the final and 15 go to the semifinal to compete for advancement. Ten songs will compete in the final. The winner of Eesti Laul 2024 will be determined in the superfinal as a result of telephone voting."

Unpopular opinion but I preferred her recent entry Remedy more than La Forza.

Some people on Reddit are guessing that Elina Nechayeva is the one who sent the Italian song. Elina represnted Estonia in ESC 2018 with "La Forza." She finished in 8th place.

Yes, its commonly known that Elina Necheyeva is the only Italian speaking person in all of Estonia as the language was forbidden to be taught after 2007 in school otherwise you would for to take an intense lumberjack course as punishment.
