To misuse a famous quote, From Szczecin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an Iron Curtain of nonqualification has descended across Europe. Within that line lies all the capitals of the ancient states of Central and Eastern Europe. Vienna, Berne, Ljubljana, Zagreb, Belgrade, Podgorica, Tirane, Skopje, Nicosia, and Sofia.
In seriousness, looking at a map of the qualified countries, there's a river of red in Central Europe dividing the continent roughly back into pre-1995 EU, and the former USSR. How can you explain that all of that is just natural voting and jury patterns. Unless somehow all of the residents of the Central European countries magically became purely objective voters and outright rejected the notion of voting for their neighbours, something that has dogged the contest since 1956, meanwhile most of the former USSR countries and the Nordic countries didn't. Especially in this year which is so structured already by the likes of Bjorkman.
Basically I simply can't accept that the contest isn't rigged when all of the Nordics and all of the former USSR (barring Latvia but everyone hates that so it doesn't count) got through to the final, and none of the Balkans, nor the massive fan favourite San Marino got through. There is no way that an entire voting bloc doesn't qualify while the entirety of two voting blocs qualify without a bother without some kind of meddling. Bjorkman and Co. seem hellbent on creating the perfect show out of the Eurovision and don't seem to mind throwing away the Contest aspect of it. I mean I know they said they wanted to take the ESC back to older times, but I didn't know they meant 1956 with rigging and all that.
