I would say another disappointing choice, but it's Denmark doing Denmark as usual so I don't particularly care. Same old same old, with a different lick of paint to make people think they're going in a daring direction for a change when they are really not. If you're going to go down your viking, pirate whatever route (which is fine, I get that this is a very beloved thing for a lot of people due to fiction, tv shows and whatnot) then heck, at least make the song interesting. Go full blown with it. This sounds like it was snatched from some Danish boybands underwear drawer and some foot stomps were added for that authentic viking touch. To me it comes off as incredibly naff. Making so basic what is often a fun novelty just doesn't work for me. It's just high levels of dull. Woooooah oooooh ooooooh just deliver my coffin now. This falls so flat for me, which is a shame, as Rasmussen has nice hair and a glorious beard. At least I don't dislike the singer. Maybe in time i'll soften a bit, but for now this entry is a big no.
Ranking this.... It's not quite as bad as UK. I find it as empty as France so have my 3.
Easily the best Danish entry since Emmelie in my books, and probably my favourite song chosen for 2018 so far as well. It's certainly got its issues: Rasmussen's vocals can be shaky at the high and low ends, he needs a lot more confidence and energy to properly sell the song, and I'm pretty sure his backing vocals were prerecorded (they could be really hard to pull off effectively live at Eurovision).
