Re: MOISANTIA ~~~NSC 158 entry: JINNY - Wanna Be With You~~~
So I wanted to share with you all a little background of my NSC 158 entry and why for me it is the perfect representative to showcase exactly what the 90s Eurodance sound was to my ears.
The song was produced by Italian singer, writer and producer Roberto Zanetti who went under the alias of Robyx. Over the course of the 1990's, he reached his pinnacle producing some of the most iconic dance tracks of the decade such as "Bom Digi Bom (Think About The Way)" by Ice MC, "Me & You" by Alexia and "Baby Baby" by Corona. Many of his songs feature a very recognisable galloping bass pattern teamed with a treble heavy kick drum that gives every song a unique identity against other 90's Eurodance songs.
The vocalist of "Wanna Be With You" was Sandra Chambers, who first joined Zanetti's DWA (Dance World Attack) team as a backing vocalist before being promoted to lead vocals for numerous aliases (and even at one time taking over the vocal responsibilities for the Corona project after Giovanna Bersola (Jenny B) took a break to work on a jazz album). After leaving the Eurodance world in the late 90's to concentrate on raising a family, she has more recently become involved in writing and production again, helping Benny Benassi with new tracks.
The woman that you see in the video is not Sandra but rather a lip-synching model named Carryl Varley who was used as the face for the Jinny project (in the same way that Whigfield used Sannie Carlsson as their "face" while the vocals were provided by Annerley Gordon). Jinny's biggest hit single was "Keep Warm", a piano-house Eurodance song that reached #11 on the UK singles chart. The reason this song sounds so different to "Wanna Be With You" despite being released just a few months apart is because Keep Warm was originally produced and released back in 1991 when it failed to meet with commercial success, so when the 1995 re-release finally got the group into the UK charts, it was clear that the original founding members wanted to follow up that success with something that tapped into the current trends in the Eurodance scene. Step in Robyx with his trademark sound, and Wanna Be With You was born...
Hope you enjoy this perhaps lesser known Eurodance song. It's been a strong favourite of mine since 1995 (wow, that's almost 23 years now!) when I first heard it on the Radio 1 Top 40 single chart countdown and I immediately rushed out with my mum and my pocket money the next day to purchase the CD maxi single with all 6 remixes. Such happy memories and I'll always hold this sound very close to my heart...
