I need some help and/or advice from our Swedish members or anyone who has an answer to my question. I didn't know where else to post this question so I jus topened a new thread.

When I'll fly out to Malmo I'll be running from Euroclub to the arena, to my hotel, to events...etc. ESCUNITED will have three individuals in Malmo with press accreditation so the best way to stay in touch is via mobile phone.

In the US we have something called Disposable Mobile Phones. So you'll by a cheap phone with a set amount of minutes and once you run out, you'll throw it away. I don't want to use my American cell phone, it's just way too expensive.
Does anybody know if something like that is aavailable in Sweden? If yes, do you have any idea where to get that and how much money we're talking about?
If no, do you have something similar to what I'm talking about? I'd love to be able to reach out to folks and I suppose I could use skype on my phone wherever there is WiFi but you'll never know where I'm going to be.

So any guidance on this item is appreciated.

I don't think we have any disposable mobile phones here. You either get a prepaid SIM card for your already existing phone (or buy a new phone for your prepaid SIM card) or you get a 12/18/24 month subscription where a new phone is included for free.

So if your phone isn't locked to your network provider, you could probably get a prepaid SIM card.

I've never heard of any disposable phones here, I would also recomment the pay as you go subscription. I use that option for my cell phone.

Yep, I second what all the others have said. A pay as you go SIM-card would be the best way to go, as long as your phone isn't locked to a carrier. But otherwise you can probably find a cheap basic phone (without a SIM card included) for about 200-400 SEK at stores like Elgiganten. Not sure if they sell those phones at their stores, but you could probably order it and pick it up at the nearest store. For the pay as you go SIM I recommend that you go with either Telia or Halebop as your provider, as you get the best coverage with them.

Yeah, good thinking LordMarbury!

Here's a really cheap phone:
Samsung E1170 Mobiltelefon (svart) - Elgiganten

Just get a prepaid card with that (which in itself doesn't cost anything), top it up with a couple of hundred kronor so you have something to actually call with and you should be good to go!

the problem is do they ship it to america ?? and if not can you even get a sim card in the stores today ?

anyways matt if you dont care about quality heres a decent phone for like 15 bux and its has a comviq cash card with it. all you have to do when u get here is to go to the closest pressbyrån and buy a comviq amigo subscription for a 100 swedish crowns and then you can make calls home too :) depending on how long you are here you can just refill it as u go

Samsung E1080i + Comviq Start - Enkel mobiltelefon med lång batteritid.

Thank you for the info and links. Well, I have an IPhone so I don't know if a prepaid SIM would work since I would think they're all locked to the carrier. Bummer. I suppose I have to rely on WiFi afterall. Though Cell Phones are a whole lot cheaper over here. Maybe I can buy a cheap one and bring it along and once Im in Sweden I'll by a Sim Card.

Wow, so much information. Thank you for that. So to sum it up:
I saw some links for some cheap phones. Where would I go in Malmo to buy that? What store would make sense? Once they give me that phone, I can get a Prepaid card at the same place and put some cash on it and I'll be good to go? No setup fees? Will I have a phone number so people can call me?

I didn't mean that he should order it online before coming to Sweden, I was just thinking of showing him what stuff is out there. xshrug

A store like Phone House would probably be better since they tend to be located in malls or downtown, whereas Elgiganten and such are large retailers much like Best Buy, located on the outskirts of town.

Malmö has four Phone House stores:
Phone House Malmö

Yes you get a regular Swedish mobile phone number when you buy a prepaid card and those phones should be good to go. This one even comes with a prepaid card in the deal:
Samsung E1150 mobiltelefon hos Phone House

If I remember right from the last time I got a new kontantkort I paid about 150kr one time sum to get the sim card and then you just add the amount you want to call/sms for on top of that. You will have a real swedish cell phone number so people can both call and text to you as much as your phone will hold.

But the sum I paid is from two to 3 years ago and it could quite possibly have gone down a lot since then. You can keep using the number it will provide as long as you refill the number with cash at least once a year.

i think u found a winner there. and regarding shipping it to the states it would actually save alot of time if its possible then he would be good 2 go and all he has 2 do when he arrived is 2 hit a pressbyrån and fill it up

Well, I first read this thread now... I guess the others have said most of what could be answered.

To get a cheap phone that's unlocked is easier on the net shops, but they should also be found in places like Elgiganten or MediaMarkt (like bigger multimedia/technology type of stores)... rather those than the smaller mobile shops like The Phone House (if you're going to a physical shop that is).

We don't really have the disposable phone system in Sweden as in the US, so you need a SIM card which you charge with a certain amount. Sim cards like those are easily found in Pressbyrån or 7-Eleven shops.

All in all a cheap phone (200-400kr) plus a SIM card (Comviq or Halebop I guess are the ones you don't need to register) which you charge with atleast 100kr.

If you want any more info on Malmö then I'll gladly help out since I live here and I know where to go, eat, shop etc.

You can get a pay-as-you-go card for a fixed amount with a local carrier in any convenience store, kiosk or food retail store. No need to look them up online beforehand or to buy them online. They work great and you get a pretty generous amount of minutes for your buck (crown).

If you own a carrier-locked cell phone, just get a cheap one in Sweden. You can get one for around 12 bucks over here.

Thanks for the advice, that's probably the way to go. I heard that in Sweden you don't have to pay if you're the one receiving the call, only the callers so that saves me a bit of money, too.
