Why did ESC change so much?

EBU wanted countries to show their national heritage and language is a part of it. The orchestra was a sign of a genuine musical accompaniment, now you can insert anything you want to the playback, so the song will be better, than it really should be. Formal outfits were a sign of seriousness.

So it is your personal opinion which doesn't make it a fact. But the reality is that the contest was considered a kitsch fest in the 70s, 80s & 90s with the orchestra & language rule. Changing that back will not change the contest's reputation.

^^

But now 57 years later, we have (more) an United Europe (sometimes:p) and English is their the common language.
I still do think countries may sing in their mother language but also can choose other languages (eg Finland 2012, Bulgaria 2012)

The orchestra and certainly not having live instruments, ok that I also want back.

Formal outfits, no! Because you won't attrack the same kind of audience

Was it? Some proof, please? And why has it been that way in the past?

You can search the Internet but the songs even back in the day have been called outdated and out of touch with the contemporary music charts. It's the reason why Abba was such a big deal cause they actually broke the old chanson style that people got so tired of hearing.

People always say that "Things were so much better back in the day" but that applies to so many things in life and it's not exclusively Eurovision. People will say the same thing in 20 years saying "Things were so much better in 2012"

And what's wrong with that? Would you prefer to listen to some bad melodies? That live orchestra costed us some points (I totally believe that!) back in 1991!

Check the sax old man right after the first chorus. Our original sax player got sick one day before the contest and they had to replace him with this old guy who could barely breathe! Let alone play the sax! He totally messed up his solo part!

But I gotta say I agree with Christer Björkman. He said once he would love to see a stage divided in half. One side would be with the orchestra and the other one without it so we could use the playback for songs like Loreen's for example and the orchestra for songs like....hm UK 2012 maybe?

No, that would be a great loss of time, energy and money... and for questionable results. Sound-wise, there is definitely a huge discrepancy between recorded tracks and live orchestra, we don't know if some entries would benefit more by performing entirely live while others don't.

Plus, an orchestra costs a lot... If I take your examples, up-tempo song would go for a cd and ballads would go for an orchestra. Well, sometimes it's not so black and white, entries that mix different types of music would surely tend to go for the record to come close to the original without any effort to make, then the orchestra would be pretty useless. Same thing if only few finalists need orchestra, it would be neither profitable nor useful.

The return of an orchestra for Eurovision would be regarded as a tacky accessory unless everyone's forced to use it. It wouldn't add anything to the current contest.

I agree with you here. No one would benefit from something like this. But when I imagine it I like it. :p But as you said it's impossible and I'm glad it it! :p In my mind it looks nice though. xD
