We have a thread on favorite flags. Now, how about the opposite? Which flags make you dizzy, or hurt your eyes? that make you think: "What on earth were they thinking?!"

Of course, this is NOT to insult the countries/regions themselves; this is just about the flags.

Let's begin.

Antwerp (province), Belgium:

Glarus, Switzerland:

Walloon, Belgium:

Saint Pierre and Miquelon, France (overseas collectivity near Canada):

We can see that poor color combos, too-saturated colors, and too-busy designs make a flag hard to look at.

I love St Pierre & Miquelon and Lincolnshire!

I hate the Welsh one I think it's so ugly (good job I've finished uni there otherwise I'd be lynched ). I wish they'd use the Flag of St David instead because that's lovely.

I dont like the Ulster Banner either, similarly, I wish that the St Patrick's Cross would become the offical flag of Northern Ireland.

Outside the UK, I dont like the Chinese flag (it's sooo Communist), the Japanese flag (it's just boring), Kyrgyzstan (just ugly) and Tibet (my OCD kicks in with the fact that the yellow border only covers three out of four sides).

I also dont like the flag of the Commonwealth. It could look much more handsome and reflective of the Commonwealth's history, whereas this just looks like a dreadful 1960's creation.

I love how instead of merely replying to my post, you took the time to take a screen shot of it, upload it, then mention my name on your post! awful lot of care and attention went to your post ;) I feel extra speshul

Well I didn't know if it was just happening for me or not.

I love the old South African flag, they were crazy to replace it. The new one ignores the White South African heritage imo. I'd rather they just added perhaps one or two traditional African flags to the old flag.

I love St Lucia too, a lot of the Caribbean states have nice flags.

Displaying the old South African flag is a sin worse than blasphemy now. Having said that, I still have a tremendous sense of respect for it. (feeling terribly ashamed) I have grown to like the new flag as well, but it's more a sense of familiarity than respect.

The idea with the new flag was to not include any symbology or references to the past, hence the fresh design. Did you know that it has absolutely no meaning at all?

I dont see why you should be ashamed it's part of your history... just because it was flown at not a great time does not mean that flag, or what it represents, is bad.

Yeah I guessed that, that's why Im not so keen on it. I dont think the current flag looks bad, I just prefer when flags convey a nation's history & culture, but that's just my opinion of course :p
Had I been the designer I'd have kept the Dutch-based flag background, and the small Union Flag - both those represent the White South Africans, and the Dutch one should be larger cuz there are more with Dutch ancestry than British. And then they could have replaced the small (what I think are) Orange Free State/Transvaal flags with flags to represent to the Zulu people and the Xhosa people - as the two largest Black South African groups.

But Im not a flag designer so I dont want you to feel like Im passing unwarranted judgement on your flag, sorry
