The 'rise of English language' in Eurovision

I'm absolutely against a language rule. There are artists who prefer to sing in English, even if it isn't their mother tongue. Many years ago Nadine Beiler won "Starmania" in Austria (Tom Neuwirth = Conchita came in second) and a contract of a record company. The record company forced her to sing in German at her first album. She hated it and you could recognize it every time she had to sing it. I think she was so frustrated by that, she almost quitted her singing career. Sadly enough, as her dream of an English song in ESC came true and she accomplished to get to the grand final, the performance was extremely underrated. So we would miss many great artists with a language rule, or could you imagine f.i. Rise Like A Phoenix in German?

I agree with you. I mean, I confess - I would love it if countries send songs in their own language more, but there definitely shouldn't be a rule. It's brings only negative effects, just like in Nadine's cae as you mentioned.

I wish Rise Like A Phoenix were in German. English is overrated and its superficial overrepresentation prevents us from having kickass entries sometimes.

I don't understand why someone expects and craves that countries should send songs in their own languages these days lol

How does English exactly represent cultures that are not natively English?

Last year, Croatia profited from the combination of Italian and English. If the song had had to be performed in Croatian, as would have been the case under the old language rule, it wouldn't have been able to achieve the same impact.

Suddenly I support the language rule...

I have no problem with most entries being in English, but it would be nice to hear more Spanish and French.

Multiculturalism: When everyone sings in English and sends a song composed by Swedes.

Songs in English get more points because you know the lyrics and it helps to like the song, thats why :uk: and :ie: slayed the past Eurovisions and now they mostly suck when everyone else can use English. It's rare when a song is better in native language than in English..
