Does anyone else think that while we are only inching there year by year, Eurovision is becoming a lot more popular, a fairer contest for all and that many broadcasters and countries are beginning to change their attitudes to the contest? Let's take yesterday as an example, Germany managed to win with a song not typical of the norm for ESC, added to the fact that a Big 4 country to the west of the continent won. Norway and Iceland's great results the previous year also add to this belief :p

It appears that many broadcasters are also looking for better quality songs, more interesting selection methods and publicising the contest more than it has before, and the media in Britain, for example, appear to have turned away from the usual diaspora argument and instead slated the song.

Sure there are still problems (Russian bloc voting for example, although the audience clearly showed a distaste to that) but maybe they will be ironed out in the coming years, and there can be a good mix of western and eastern countries competing in harmony and based on musical merit :) If this is what the new Eurovision will be like I can't wait

I think the last two Eurovision were amazing.

We had two different and great top 5, even top 10.

I tought after 2007 & 2008 that Eurovision was hit badly, Serbia was a great winner who received point everywhere but the rest was just friendly votes! & 2008 was just fans of a singer & Russians voting for their country.Worst Rusian's song for years at the time!

But 2009 & 2010 show some great voting, with only the best songs from East, Scandinavia, The Balkans South & Western Europe all received good points.

After watching two Esc with my family and friends saying 'Norway is good, Iceland is terrific, Azerbaijan is great, Turkey is nice, Uk is great ' and to see them doing well in the voting is great and it's something that didn't happen for us since 2006:)

And this year i watched it again with a lot of people and they liked Denmark, Germany, Turkey, Ukraine, Romania, Greece & Serbia and all of them did well and are from very different places in Europe.

Now there is always some rubish people who are going to say the voting was all crap; that they won't watch ESC again because their favorite entry didin't win etc. ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS GROW UP! If you watch the contest and one of your favorites 5-6 songs in the contest wins or do well i think it's good night, people have different taste you know:)

I thought 2009 was amazing

and 2010 was even better. The interval act was sensational and really promoted the spirit of EUrovision.

And then of course: We won!!!

I really do think this years quality of songs at eurovision was sensational. Usually there are some pretty rubbish 'novelty' acts, it seems that now we have returned to eclectic, decent music! Thank god!

I dont feel Germany should have won, as there were at least 15 others that could have easily snatched the title. Iceland, ireland, romania, armenia, azerbaijan, israel, begium to name but a few were potential winners. Germany's song although different, made little sense and to me was rather pathetic. I am not saying that the song isnt catchy but shes a very strange singer and I dont like her at all. Still, its nice to see music being celebrated differently and everyone has their own opinions. It is obvious less neighbour voting is happening, even though there are still moments of it. Lets hope it completely irons out in the coming years.

Im sure UK will send something much more fresh and inspiring next year too!

The overall quality of songs this year was a HUGE DECLINE compared to last year... why is everyone fooling themselves?

Really bad songs got through to the final, everything sounded so random and typical, the songs with national identity were punished... why is this good for Eurovision? Now it's just generic pop songs and nothing else...

Anyway Germany winning was good indeed... but looking at the top 5 it was still mostly diaspora voting that decided the outcome...

Oh well

Congrats to Germany at least since they had something up to date and it was the right song to win really...

They were punished for being bad songs. You still haven't defended your seeming opinion that if a song has an ethnic sound to it, then it automatically deserves to be in the final or at least to have the ethnic sound serve as a giant pro for the song.

No. Just because a song has an ethnic sound to it does not mean it's automatically good. Also, we had several songs with an ethnic sound to them make it to the final. Just because your favourites didn't make it doesn't make the contest results unfair or mean that ethnic songs were punished (especially when several of them made it to the final). Your favourite etchnically flavoured song didn't make it. Suck it up and move in.

Definitely this years has been without doubt the most amazing Eurovision ever, slightly beating last year.

The quality of the songs has shot up quite dramatically these last 2 years and I think it is showing, especially here in the United Kingdom, where it is getting more popular year-on-year. Even Eurovision-haters + the media are have started admitting (2009 = 2010) that the majority of songs are good and I think there is now a genuine interest in the contest in the United Kingdom and a will to do well. As a British fan, I have only Russia and Norway to thank for this for being such excellent hosts, as well as the majority of Eurovision nations who all seem to no longer be sending joke acts (or they get knocked out in the Semis  )

I agree Sean, it's getting there. There are still a few joke entries, but I think it's needed actually, as it adds to the diversity of the contest. Just wish it wasn't the same countries all the time *cough*UK*cough* :p

And there's probably always gonna be some voting issues, but I saw less of that this year, so it seems to be going in the right direction, and as long as there's people voting (juries are people too), we're not gonna get completely rid of it. But getting it down to a minimum is possible. Besides, Fairytale last year and Satellite this year is evidence that with a good song, anyone can win this.

Things have been steadily improving since all the changes were made in the 90s. The removal of the language limitation and orchestra, the big arenas with a pop concert atmosphere and, most importantly, the phone vote, have made Eurovision a more modern production and more attractive to top singers and songwriters.

It's just taken some countries a long time to notice.

Definitely true! Eurovision is becoming more and more popular and respectful. Especially this year, there are a lot of quality song. Expect 4-5 country all of the songs are decent. Germany show that we don't have to make typical eurovision songs to have a good result. Apart from these, the interval act was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!! Thank you Norway!

Exactly. I don't understand why so many people act like juries are some sort of infallible computer program or even God and that they will be totally fair.

The problem is that UK wasn't a joke entry this year. It was meant to be taken seriously. It was just really bad.

Ouch... Well, fair enough, they might not be intended as jokes, but they don't really come out that great either... But hey, keep this up, and maybe one day Norway won't be the country with the most last places anymore. :D

Where do you see your nick there? If it's about me mocking the UK, it's because Sean is also from the UK afaik. But no, I'm not having a go at you, and I have nothing against you in any way, I just think it's fascinating how we can disagree so much on so many things. If it comes out as me attacking you, then I'm sorry, it's not intended that way. Oh, and I'm a "he", Morty is (supposed to be) a male name. :)
