DOES TURKEY PROCEED TO THE GRAND FINAL WITH "ITS DIASPORA"?
hey I'm new to this forums. I've read most of discussion going here about Semi 2. I'm a Turkish scientist so I want to see if I'm biased or not.
I totally agree with most of you about Slovenia and Portugal. IMO they should really proceed to the final instead of Malta and Lithuania. On the other hand, I totally disagree with some of you who says Turkey does not deserve being at final and achieved being at final with some diaspora they have. IMO Turkish entry is great this year contrary to last year entry which was terrible. So I wanted to check myself if I'm biased.
Now I wanted to analyze this diaspora issue. So, did Turkey really proceed to the grand final with the votes of lots of Turkish people living in Europe despite of "a bad song"? Therefore, I am going to list other countries in semi 2 which gave at least 8 points to Turkey at last three years (2008, 2009, 2010) and 0 points at last three years (2008, 2009, 2010).
The countries (from semi 2) always giving high scores (8, 10, 12) to Turkey:
- Netherlands (10, 8, 8 .. that means 10 points in 2008, 8 in 2009 and 8 in 2010)
The countries (from semi 2) always giving low scores (0, 1, 2) to Turkey:
- Belarus (3, 0, 3 .. that means 3 points in 2008, 0 in 2009 and 3 in 2010)
- Portugal (0, 3, 0)
- Slovenia (0, 0, 2)
Well as you see only Netherlands regulary gives 8 and above points to Turkey from semi 2 countries. (There are also Macedonia and Bosnia giving high points but they did not give 8 above points for both of three years).
On the contrary, there are three countries which give always 3 and lower points even in 2010 at which manga's song was great for a common voice and ranked 2nd at final.
So with regular support of only 1 (or maybe 3 with addition of Macedonia and Bosnia) country is not sufficient to go to grand final. You need to have a good song. If you do not have (as Turkey did not have the last year) you cannot go to the grand final.
This regular support thing helps a lot to Balkans countries, Scandivaian Countries and Old Soviet Countries. But still you need a powerful song to go to the Grand Final.
Contrary to 70s, 80s and 90s, Turkey sends really good songs if we consider last ten years. The reason for that is winner song of Sertap. She awaked public's interest on ESC after she won 2003 and also government started to pay really high money and work for Eurovision.
2003 - Sertap - Every Way That I can (Winner)
2004 - Athena - For Real (4th, one of best in esc)
2005 - Gulseren - Rimi Rimi Ley (13th, it's ok)
2006 - Sibel Tuzun - Superstar (11th, it's ok)
2007 - Kenan Dogulu - Shake it up Shekerim ( 4th, not my taste but a good pop song)
2008 - Hadise - Dum Tek Tek (4th, not my taste but a real catchy pop song)
2009 - Mor ve Otesi - Deli (7th, really a great song)
2010 - Manga - We could be the same (2nd, a great one too)
2011 - Yuksek Sadakat - Live it up (could not go to the final, an average song)
To sum up, I do not think Turkey always has a slot for grand final because of some "diaspora" it has. If it sends a bad song, it cannot proceed to grand final as you saw last year. The success of Turkey for last years is about the increase at the popularity of ESC in Turkey with the winning of Sertap in 2003 and the push of government.
thank you.
