Re: SEMI FINAL 1 - DISCUSSION - 21:00 CET

Sorry if this has already been mentioned earlier in the thread but did anyone else pick up on the "shadow" singers that Cyprus and Greece both used last night? Clearly both were planted there to bolster the flimsy vocals both girls had to offer, and I suppose according to EV rules had to be present on the stage. I just thought that putting them at the side of the stage in near darkness (and clearly issuing instructions to both not to make any movements that would draw viewers' attention to them) was a pretty underhand tactic to use to improve both song's chances. I don't think they'll get away with it so easily in the final. That aside, I was chuffed to bits that Hungary made it through. Big fan of that song!

wtf?
Both countries had backing vocals, Greece has a girl, and Cyprus a man, and yes they were back and right of the stage, so what ?

I will not be surprised if Belarus would qualify tomorrow. It was one of the better, most solid performances tonight.

On Estonia: sometimes it's better to just let things happen so I keep my mouth shut on that one.

I hope though that the juries won't forget that in the end of the day it's a song contest... not singing, nor performance (not saying those things doesn't matter, but still).

^ kind of agree with a-lister. We have too much of singin contest : star academy, idol franchise, x factor, nations got talent, the voice and so on..and so on.. :(
This has to be the only song contest we have left in the world.

Not sure if that has been posted yet but Ola said that juries and televoters pretty much agreed on 8/10 qualifiers with one more song going through as a jury favourite and one heavily supported by the public.

Could be Albania as juries favourite and Belarus/Ireland won the fans vote. Compact Disco was a trending topic on twitter last night.

I think there have been many discussions already about this in the past...

But I do think the performance, vocals but also the visual aspects (LED backdrop, dresses, choreography etc.) unfortunately play some role too. It's hard to deny that we live in a very visual era.

yeah, but why is it performed live then?
if it was only about the songs, it would have been done with playback.

besides, what is a song without a singer? xshrug

It is not a song contest (mainly), at least not anymore. Proof? Russia 2012 is in the final. xrofl3 We can't believe all the songs that are qualifying to the final, year after year, are the 10 best songs in their semi-finals. It's like an utopia, if you think like that. Staging, visuals, image, lights, colours, all that stuff count more and more.

I don't think the order they announce the finalists is random. Always the last ones to be announced are public favourites or countries that usually don't qualify.

Exactly, it's not random! Was it random that in 2004 when ESC was in Turkey, the last two envelopes were Greece and Cyprus?

I predict tonight, the last 2 envelopes will be Serbia & Sweden!

NEW ranking of the first semi-final's (qualifers and non-qualifiers)

12 to :md: MOLDOVA (my super favourite of this semi)
10 to :is: ICELAND (Like it a lot, but didn't impress me as much as I expected, doesn't stand a chance of repeating Johanna's success IMO)
08 to :il: ISRAEL (I have only one word for this not qualifying: outrageous)
07 to :al: ALBANIA (Beautiful and unique. This song finally touched me)
06 to :ro: ROMANIA (I felt like dancing while I watched this :D)
05 to :ie: IRELAND (catchy, professional and good, that's how I see it now )
04 to :hu: HUNGARY (boring performance, but still like the song)
03 to :ch: SWITZERLAND (if Eurovision was fair, this would have qualified)
02 to :fi: FINLAND (just for the song)
01 to :gr: GREECE (the sound is really catchy, can't avoid having it constantly in my head)

11. Denmark (did nothing to me in the semi...Used to love this, now I don't care about it. It's somewhere lost in my top 42)
12. Austria (I don't like this song, but they had a great performance and everybody enjoyed it)
13. Latvia (sounded better than expected)
14. Cyprus (One word: disappointing)
15. Belgium (not as bad as the next songs to come)
16. San Marino (wasn't as bad as I expected, but I don't like this at all)
17. Russia (Grannies are sweet... song wise and vocally this doesn't exist)
18. Montenegro (everything about this was dreadful)

I was a fan of Iceland's song, but after watching it on stage I'm not anymore. Ok, it's a nice song, but too "typical" and "standard" ESC song... Nothing fresh! The overall performance was shouting "cliché" and "something's missing"! And I even enjoyed Greece more than this!

On the other hand, I was never fond of Hungarian song, but I enjoyed it a lot in the SF, and it's nice that they qualified! I also enjoyed the Swiss song too.

They said 8/10 qualifiers were the same for juries and televoters. One of them qualified thanks to the juries and the other one thanks to the televoters.

So I say juries saved Hungary and televoters saved Russia. Switzerland was probably the other one in top-10 for juries, but unfortunately it wasn't enough. I have no clue about what's the song which was in top-10 in televoting, but missed it because of the juries... maybe Latvia?

Well, they had enevelopes in 2004. It's since 2009 that they are announced only in the screen. First year, nothing strange happened, but in Oslo and Dusseldorf, I think it was prepared.
In Oslo they left Nordic countries (Iceland and Denmark) for the end. Also Belgium.

I wouldn't be so sure the juries didn't vote for Russia... Probably Switzerland was top 10 with televotes and Belgium or Finland top 10 with juries

OK then, but what kind of professional jury would vote for Russia 2012? Can someone explain me? I didn't get the song's structure yet.
