Re: SAN MARINO 2014 - Valentina Monetta

Ralph Siegel payed me to record the song in my bedroom. We used my £80 microphone. I also provided the piano and synths.

That explains it, now would you be so kind and get Siegel's sorry ass to a decent studio, please :D

Old-fashioned...but in a good way. Not as good as her previous entry, but decent and classy. 7 points.

Who thought the white background and the piano scenes were a good idea? xcrazy

I have to confess I like it in English a bit better, if only we didn't have a gazillion songs in English already xgaah

I like the "oldies" feeling of the song. And I love the italian language. This is definitely not modern, but I dont mind at all. I still listen to a lot of music from several decades ago. Forse is not out of the best of this category though. And (I know this might be like cursing in the church) Valentina really is not adding anything to the song. Her voice is ok, but not more. It wasnt in 2012. It wasnt in 2013. And it isn't in 2014...
Will this qualify? I doubt it. Last year I loved Crisalide - not because of Valentina, not because it was from San Marino; but because of the song itself. But on the stage in Malmo Valentina did not make a great impact, neither on the general televoter nor on me.
I am afraid Valentina will struggle once again.

It's a very good song and I was between 8 and 10, finally I gave it 10! But her previous entry was a little better!

English version: 6 points. This is a middle-of-the-road ballad with enough going on to not be considered boring. The lyrics are good, she always has a good voice, and the instrumentals are good as well. Something's missing, though. Maybe being the representative for three straight ESCs got to her.

Italian version: 6 points. This version is slightly better, but not enough to make me choose it over the English version.

Both versions, however, are not memorable, and that's where the song loses points for me. It's a disappointment that this is her last ride as far as ESC is concerned, but it's appropriate, because she is looking older than what her actual age is. I imagine performing three straight ESCs can wear down even the best performers. My final thought is that even though the song probably won't win and a trip to the final is no guarantee either, she's had a good run and I commend her for that.

The video is stunning but makes everything even sadder for me. Those gorgeous dark beach scenes.. I just find the whole song achingly beautiful. I can't stop listening to the English version. It keeps getting to me, when Valentina cries the long "Maybe".. so much heartache and longing I feel from her. Every emotion is up front and on display, raw. I feel for her so much, unlike any other artist.. even Rona.

I believe the song will be kinder to Valentina's Jazz sensibilities as well, allowing her to be more free throughout vocally. "Crisalide" was so fast and constant, there wasn't really the room there for anything but a straight rendition.

I actually enjoy the discussion. They make sense and I agree with what's been said about the contest.

She decided on language, cause you posted a poll and it says - Maybe (Forse), I rank different Italian and English one..
