Because most of what he does is pompous dated kitsch....
"Shady Lady" is probably the only good thing that came from this person, and part of that is Ani Lorak that really lifted a song that in its initial phase was kind of meh.

I get what you mean, but I still think they need to be a bit more thoughtful at least if they really want to aim for the higher positions, as 2018 taught us (although they still did better in televotes than most countries would do with that). Maybe, just maybe, the times when Russia could sail through to the finals with crap just based on diaspora votes alone is over... but yeah you're probably right, they will still make it with mediocrity but if they aim for victory they will have to try harder than being lazy.
You miss the point entirely, it means they don't have to be creative or put effort in as doing nothing usually is still rewarded by the gigantic diaspora/political voting.i never said their entries were good (although i did like Lazarevs song). personally I think Russia probably has one of the worst attitudes to the contest, the past 2 years proved it and the years before where they'd just drop a song last second or even late. They have No reason to be super thoughtful or try real hard because people will vote for them anyway regardless. Fyi Latvia still gave it's Televote 12 to russia this year. That's russian diaspora, I wish our limited diaspora were as fanatical at voting as the Russians.

I agree but "Shady Lady" aged really bad, it wasn't half bad 10 years ago, nowadays sounds cheap as hell, I am afraid we won't get anything more in touch with current music scene, Kontoupoulos is stucked in 00's for good.

Actually, "Shady Lady" I still enjoy, to me it was the opposite that it started meh but turned out better than expected, but that's also an exception for me when it comes to his compositions, the rest are really dated and today almost impossible to listen to.
"Mamo" was indeed the last great entry they had, the grandmas were enjoyable as well.

I still enjoy it also, but I liked it more in the past, after ESC I never listened to the audio alone, I need to watch the whole performance to enjoy. It was so flawless.

She took part in our NF first, with this song. The original version was fully in Ukrainian so the only Russian thing was the translated lyrics.
The producer/composer said back then that he was against translating it to Russian but they did it in order to win Russian NF.
She received a big backlash in Russia & death threats because the song was "too Ukrainian", to the point where she was given 3 security guards.
Imho the most Russian song was their 2012 entry. Even despite the chorus.
If this year's entry is produced by the Dream Team I doubt we will hear something that sounds like the current Russian music scene. Dream Team's weakest link usually is the song itself.
Ironically it was at least half-Ukrainian. "Mamo" is a spoof of Ukrainian folk songs (esp the lyrics). With Ukrainian performer & language (including the song title), Georgian-Ukrainian producer & composer.

At this point, the problem lies with the Russian delegation, and this is coming from someone that was a fan of You Are The Only One and A Million Voices, though I didn't have them as my winners.
The last time Russia took a risk (Party For Everybody) the Russian public was allowed to vote in a national final and they managed to grab 2nd place with a song that had less than 20 words in English.
Until Russia brings back their national final or the delegation decides to take a risk, nothing's going to change, and it shouldn't be a surprise that so many singers choose to stay away.

while i certainly appreciate what kirkorov brings to eurovision, he doesn't match polina at all. gutkin's songs for eurovision have been terrible but we can't really say he had good performers to work with either. maybe he could make it work with her!!You don't say if you prefer her song to be from Kirkorov or Gutkin though
