Ok so based on the first impression I think I'd rank them in the following groups:
Cláudia Pascoal - Nasci Mulher
Bárbara Tinoco - Goodnight
Inês Apenas - Fim do Mundo
Neon Soho - Endless World
Bandua - Bandeiras
Mimicat - Ai coração
You Can't Win, Charlie Brown - Contraste Mudo
Edmundo Inácio - A Festa
April Ivy - Modo Voo
SAL - Viver
Dapunksportif - World Needs Therapy
Moyah - Too Much Sauce
The Happy Mess - O Impossível
Ivandro - Povo
Esse Povo - Sapatos de Cimento
Churky - Encruzilhada
Bolha - Sonhos de Liberdade
Lara Li - Funâmbula
Teresinha Landeiro - Enquanto é Tempo
Voodoo Marmalade - Tormento
Cláudia Pascoal is my initial standout. I can imagine that for people who only know her from Eurovision 2018 this is an absolute shock, but this is Cláudia through and through, it's 100% representative of her musical style ever since FdC 2018 and I absolutely love it. I think it's her song that sticks the most on first listening so far too, which is great for Eurovision. This will probably have the most complete package regarding staging as well, but we'll see.
Bárbara Tinoco also stayed true to her style (again, probably a shock for international fans who only know her because of her FdC 2020 stint). You can immediately tell that it's a Tinoco song, it's 100% her style and her tone is pretty unique. But I am so used to listening to her unique voice in Portuguese that the impact of the English on first listen left me completely bewildered, not gonna lie. I'm sure I'll get used to it in time. Anyway it's a beautiful song that I'm sure will be pretty sucessful in radio play and Spotify streams, but my major doubt is the staging potential. I'm sure Bárbara will pull through though.
Inês Apenas is probably my current 3rd, I love the instrumental and the production of the song. Kinda of a shame the chorus isn't more prevalent but I really like it.
Neon Soho was a very good surprise, same for Bandua and Mimicat. Bandua's lyrics are pretty original. Mimicat left her overplayed wanna-be drum and bass/soul style behind and went for something much more original and authentic.
You Can't Win Charlie Brown's song is beautiful and I really love the way the instrumental grows throughout the song, but I doubt it can stand out at ESC.
From the rest of the pack, I have to say April Ivy disappointed me. I'm really glad we have a pop song, especially one that is on trend with the 80s revival. But there's something so off about it. I feel like they wrote the song in English (like it's usually the case with April), but then translated it to Portuguese in a rush for FdC because they didn't get the memo that RTP allows songs in English for 6 years already now, and that the last 2 winners were in English. It's like she's struggling to fit the sentences on the verses, the metrics of the song are completely effed off, and this is the studio version. I like the song but this really throws me off:
Anyway, I think it's overall a pretty good selection with a bigger mixture of styles than usual, which is always welcomed. I can't stay there's any bad song here, just songs that don't really fit my style. RTP keeps up the good work, let's hope the same can be said for the staging next month!
