Re: PORTUGAL 2014
A lot has been written since the semi-final that took place last Saturday. Can't bother going through that right now, so sorry if what I write has already been mentioned by others around this thread.
Unsurprisingly I was disappointed with the whole batch of songs. It's like Portugal still not thinks Eurovision as other countries do. The lack of ambition is more than notorious.
Having that said I consider Catarina's song to be the one with least chances of getting us the more than probable typical bad result. But if that happens it won't be thank to Catarina herself, or the lyrics...if we manage to go through the final at least, we should already be grateful to the talented songwriter that goes by the name of Andrej Babic. A seasoned Eurovision contributor, he knows how to deliver the right kind of music. However I wish he'd team up with a better lyricist and that a better performer was picked to represent his song.
From the songs that passed through to the final, I can't understand songs like Zana's and Suzy's going through. For a moment it felt like I was watching those Sunday "specials" with pimba music on the concorrence channel, TVI. I think Emanuel himself would do a better figure if trying to enter the contest than these unknown girls he somehow always seems to cast. IMO Suzy is even worse than Sabrina in 2007, which actually was not that bad in the end and tolerable.
About the other two...Raquel and Rui have decent enough voices and image to represent us out there, but once again, the stuff they performed last weekend is below par. Rui's song in particular was quite the snoozer. Eurovision demands energy. Or if you're going to do a ballad, make it right, including all the drama you can within. And if possible even more drama as an extra on the side. Otherwise, it's naive to think Europe cares for "Rui's dream", the lyrical content of the song is zero.
Maybe English adaptations of the songs can still save things. Songs should already have been presented in English beforehand, in this semi-final. It'll clearly take English to get a good result again for us. And I'm not anti-patriotic at all or against my language. I've just watched this for far too long and am aware of the rules of the game. Just sad that my country seems to keep on refusing to play according to them.
Last but not least...I was bummed that the two least bad songs didn't make it to the final. Those would be Carla's and Lara's. At least image-wise the appeal would have been there. The songs could later be re-worked until it was time to present them. I think Lara not qualifying surprised a lot of people. Really, a shame. But I have to admit that the chorus for her song was quite...cheesy, shall I put it that way. On the other hand she definitely knew how to interact with the cameras and has a memorable stage presence....something that cannot be said about pretty much the rest of the competitors.
