esctoday.com interview
Can you introduce us about your music career and your life from the beginning?
Our life is pretty much rock’n’roll-ish. It all began around 1989-1990. Youngsters dreaming about playing on big stages, while growing up in a small town not far from Chisinau, we didn’t have our own instruments, but forks, spoons, books and a very used acoustic guitar. The school yard, small local underground clubs somehow transformed into something more serious and we gathered into a band and in November 1994, the first demo was recorded in a professional studio, and we appeared for the first time as “Zdob si Zdub” on a good music festival in Moscow. We were lucky to meet great people with useful advises.
The band’s history is full of interesting events. We've played quite a few gigs all over Europe, took part in numerous projects, and released some albums. We had the beautiful experience to be on stage with renowned bands like: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Korn, Rollins Band and many others, to play at Sziget, Exit, and Roskilde etc. We got acquainted and became friends with many artists, like Hubert von Goisern, Emir Kusturica.
In 2005 we decided to try something new, thus we took part in the Eurovision Song Contest with "Boonika Bate Doba" which came 6th.
The time has changed us: we’ve gone from hardcore aggressive music to a mixture of a bit of everything. But the most important thing in our careers is the stability we have found to date. We have found ourselves. This time is the peak of our creativity – new album; new understanding of music; Eurovision as a good opportunity to reopen the European audience.
What are your musical goals?
We want to save our individuality. The band works with real substance and music, always open to new projects and experiments, we prefer not to limit ourselves to certain styles, but try to find something new, interesting, and intriguing first of all for us. The harmony within the band is the most important music goal. There has to be chemistry among the band members and this creates beautiful results and makes any event a pleasure for us.
How do you describe us your song styles?
Some would say that it is a combination of hardcore, folklore, ethno-rock, hip-hop, jungle, punk... it’s hard to say. The fact is that we will never fit under a standard term of musical style. For example, our new album, that was produced by Marc Elsner and recorded last year in Berlin, turned out non-standard for us, one will find songs in English and Romanian languages with German character and elements of folk. All songs are beautiful and have some special meaning. You can understand it only when you listen to it.What was the meaning of Eurovision for you, what contributed your 2005 participation to your career? It was a new and different experience, but we treat this contest with enough irony and humor. It’s a big production and of course we respect the work of all people that are involved. It was Moldova’s first participation, thus there was a lot of enthusiasm and responsibility. We felt the support of many countries and it meant a lot to us. But also we were criticized – many of our fans were not happy to see us in this contest. The contribution was huge – it made us meditate about our career.
How do you consider the quality of Eurovision songs generally?
For example in Moldova, the level of the contest increases every year. Now you must earn the right to take part in the contest. There were worthy opponents, who have been specially prepared for the competition and there were songs in Euro-disco style, namely fitting the format of the contest. This victory was truly difficult for us. In general, Eurovision is an unpredictable contest. Everybody wants to win, so the “battle” will be difficult! The main thing is fairness.
What are your favorite all times Eurosongs and also Moldovan ones?
We like the original artists, which were brave enough to perform songs that are “unusual” for the contest. There were artists, like the band Athena from Turkey, the band Lordi from Finland, Verka Serduchka from Ukraine, that shook the established stereotype. But most of all we like the songs “Boonika bate doba” and “So lucky”… we forgot the artist.
How is the birth process of your eurosong?
It may sound strange, but “So Lucky” was the least preferred song from our new album; we couldn’t find some special meaning there. Until the last moment we didn't feel this song as something that belongs to us. Now we are building its concept. There are some mental images that relate to this time of the year - to spring when all blossoms. We added some Balkan pipes, which we lacked. Everything is building up. The energy of the song can attract all listeners.
Have you listened to other songs of 2011 yet? What are your favorites?
We are in the process, one song per day, in order to fully feel it. We hope to finish listening all of them until the actual contest. We appreciate all the artists and their songs, cause we know how much hard work is Eurovision.
Do you think to make a promo tour?
Several members of the band have already visited Armenia and they are now in Tbilisi, then come Baku and Istanbul. They participate in various TV and radio shows; meet with the press and many friends. So far Armenia was amazingly welcoming. On the 9th of April we will take part in the Eurovision concert that will be held in Bucharest. Towards the end of April we plan (but we don’t have the exact dates yet) to visit Vilnius, Tallinn, Riga, Warsaw, Bratislava, Vienna, Moscow, Kiev, and Minsk. We hope we will be able to make it everywhere… Promo-tours are important, but, of course, without fanaticism. We spend most of out time on the road. At the moment we can afford to travel to countries where we already have friends.
