Worked my way through the Latvian entries. Wasn't the best bunch of songs, but Latvia doesn't have a large population so that's to be expected. The hope remains like always that there's that one killer mainstream pop song then, but unfortunately it just isn't there. It's going to be a rough year if you're going to go for such a mainstream euro-pop thingamajig. Time to take risks I say.
Why Even Bother Tier:
Seleste | Like Me |
Katrīna Bindere | I Will Break Your Heart |
Katrīna Dimanta | Heart Beats |
DRIKSNA | Stay |
Average/Too Many Downsides Tier:
Edgars Kreilis | Tridymite |
Bad Habits | Sail With You |
If you're going for a 'safe' song (you shouldn't) Tridymite is your best bet (obviously) and Sail With You really isn't much of a problem, but it's right up the alley of Mumford and Sons and that's a huge red flag to me for reasons I won't really go into. Gist of it is that you're banking on Northern Europe being enough. It's not. Leaves three tracks that I feel are decent options.
ANNNA - Polyester
Yes, well, it's not exactly good as a song, so why is this here then? It's just that there's a slight chance that people are going to buy into this message and the attitude. I have no way to gauge how the chances of that are and this is exactly the type of stuff I'm totally blindsided by when it blows up. Point that will always remain is that it has a melody that sticks and it's memorable. Seems like a big risk with only a decent possible reward, but I just don't know. Would not recommend sending this, but won't be disappointed if this happens.
Miks Dukurs - I'm Falling For You
Just a quality early 90s rock ballad (without the rock). It's an utterly utterly fantastic chorus. Extremely simple, but who can argue with this stuff? Song is not particularly original and there are some weak spots (transition from 1st chorus to 2nd verse is just bad for instance), but those issues aren't going to stop this from coming across as a quality song. Bigger problem here is that it's made for an audience that's either dead or dying and I don't know how this will fare with the wee ones. Truth is though that if the staging is done right it'll look like that one quality song while everyone else is taking the piss, which can work wonders in any age group. High risk, high reward. This is my pick of the bunch.
Samanta Tina - Still Breathing
Just listen to it. I can do a whole write-up but it's obvious what is going to happen here. This will just Igranka it's way out of the competition. Actually I have no way to tell. I have the problem that I actually really like songs like this that are just like sticking a thousand needles into your veins and pumping you full of whatever chemicals are sure to melt your brain. In fact I had hoped they would have gone even a step further with the dubstep nonsense. Nothing wrong with sending this. You won't seem smart, but you'll have done something epic that will not be forgotten soon. And perhaps, just maybe, this is the year that the stars align for a song like this.
