On Friday, after a very long time, I watched one of my favourite movies again, "Dante´s Peak" from 1997. Pierce Brosnan plays a volcanologist who´s send to a small town because the nearby volcano is showing signs of activity. There he meets the mayor, played by Linda Hamilton. Will he succeed and warn the population before it´s too late?? xscared

I´m generally a huge fan of disaster movies, and this one was the main reason I wanted to be a volcanologist when I was a child. A very good movie with effects that still look very good after almos a quarter century. (y)

Casino Royale about James Bond. One of the best films in the series, my opinion. I am looking forward to the latest episode about Mr Bond. According to the trailer it must be a good sequel.

1. Titane (by Julie Ducournau)

Since a car accident in her childhood, Alexia has a titanitum plate implanted in her head. From that moment on she feels (sexually) connected to vehicles instead of humans. Years later she works as an erotic dancer who turns into a cruel and ruthless serial killer. On her escape she decides to adopt the identity of Adrien, a boy who has been missed for 10 years. His father vincent, a firefighter, accepts her as his supposed son. Hiding her real sexuality gets harder and harder for Alexia as she is pregnant by a car she had sex with.

Moving along the lines of David Cronenberg, Titane is a disturbing masterpiece. The body horror scenes are fascinating and disgusting at the same time, Alexias character is amazingly mutable and hard to see through. You never get an idea of what is going on in her mind, what her goals are but that's exactly what makes the movie so unpredictable in a good way. While the plot is hard to grasp, the movie is full of creative ideas (you probably never saw a girl whose breast produce engine oil insted of mother milk). It's a movie about existential questions, about identity formation and the question whether you can have a stable identity at all. Moreover it deals with the crossing of borders in terms of gender, sexuality and norms. It's about individuals who are longing for acceptance, attention and love. The maltreated bodies are symbols for maltreated souls. Highly recommended!

2. Malignant (by James Wan)

Madison had a traumatic childhood as a child until she was adopted by a loving foster family. As a grown woman, however, her past caught up with her in the form of nightmares, in which her then imaginary friend Gabriel commits gruesome murders. However, she is not sure if these are actually just dreams or if the murders are actually happening.

This movie had a plot-twist that truly blew me away and really got under my skin. The atmospherical and mysterious drama heads into an evil final third in which the excessive violence is impressively orchestrated. The movie has got plot holes but that doesn't matter, it is simply a great genre film.

3. Last Night in Soho (by Edgar Wright)

A young, fashion-loving girl moves to London for studying at the London College of Fashion. In her dreams she travels back in time and ends up in in the 1960s, where she meats a glamorous singer she starts to idolize and following everywhere. However, she finds out that life at the time was different and way more dangerous than expected and she realize her dreams are more then just deeams.

This one was a pleasing surprise. First of all, I didn't know Edgar Wright is such an eclectic director. I've known and appreciate him for movies like Shawn of the Dead but I didn't know he can direct exciting thrillers like this one. People who like giallo movies will definitely also like the aesthetics of this one. The coloration (especially the red and blue lights), the violence and the situation of a girl in an artsy school, who get frightened and endangered in a hostile environment reminds you of some of Dario Argentos works. Visually this one might the best movie of 2021 (especially the 1960s reconstruction), the scenery really absorbs you and I wish I would have watched it in cinema. Honorable mention: we see Diana Rigg in her last role (and what a role that is!)

4. Pig (by Michael Sarnoski)

A reclusive man living in a forrest earns his money with the help of his truffle pig, which has an excellent nose. When his animal partner is kidnapped by a stranger in a burglary, he does everything in his power to find him again.

Due to the initial situation that resembles John Wick and due to Nicholas Cage being the main protagonist people got wrong expectations of this movie. It's everything but a bloody revenge movie and we don't see the over-the-top memeworthy side of Nicholas Cage but the side that once got him an Oscar. He embodies a broken and disillusioned man who is withdrawn and scarred for life but carries oppressed anger with himself. It is a sensitive character study and it thematizes topics like the loss of beloved people, broken familes, the genuiness of life and the question whether people live for themselves of for the recognition of society. it is also highly critical towards capitalism, especially the gastronomy industry. Moreover, the movie is dealing with many contrasts between the high society and nativeness which sometimes leads to bizarre situations.

5. The Green Knight (by David Lowery)

Gawain is a nephew of the legendary King Arthur. Stubborn and daring, he wants to achieve great things and earn a reputation as a knight. One day at Christmas a giant figure moves into the castle: the tree-like Green Knight. He demands a brave knight to fight and Gawain volunteers. But the stranger issues a warning: Whatever his opponent does to him, he will get a payback one year later. In order to fully earn his fame, Gawain lops the Green Knight's head off. But the victim just picks his head up again and reminds Gawain of his pact. A year later, the now famous knight has to set off to go to the Green Knights "castle". A long journey lies ahead of him, on which giants, thieves and ghosts are waiting for him and he has to prove his character.

Based on a middle age epos this is a very modern interpretation of traditional motives. The whole narration includes chapters and ornated intertitles that pays homage to its literary origin. it's an pondering movie about the value of ideals that are constructed by society, about the question whether you should follow them or question them, about making the right deicisions for yourself. The hero's journey is deconstructed and deromantisized in post-modern fashion, the power of nature contrasted to the christian civilisation. It also features some trippy elements and a big variety of different mediaval stories and references that are intervowen in the plot. The spacious, lonely landscapes are captured beautifully and always inhere the latent vibe of death.

Some more mentions:

- I've also watched Censor by Prano Bailey-Bond and I remember I liked it. However, for some reason, I forgot too much about the movie (because I was a bit sleepy when I watched it) which is why I could not include it. Certainly needs a re-watch.

- Noo, I didnot watch Dune yet, it started in the cinemas when I was stressed due to my master thesis, and now in christmas time my priorities are different. I am sure it is a fantastic movie though.

True Detective. Season 1.
Masterpiece! Matthew McConaughey is extremely charismatic actor :) The twists of the plot are quite unexpected, that is another advantage of the film. An ultimate must-watch season!

Fantastic Beasts 3 - The Secrets of Dumbledore

As a HP fan, I must admit that I really enjoyed the movie. It's brilliant and magical.

"You Were Willing To Put Yourself In Danger To Save A Perfect Stranger. Seems To Me You're The Kind Of Average Joe The World Needs Right Now."

Lally is a legend! xheart As well as Newt, Theseus, Albus, Jacob, Yusuf, Queenie..

If you ask me, BUNTY is the greatest hero xblush "No one can know everything, not even you."

p.s. I hope there's more HP and FB fans here
