Re: Japan | 日本 | WV95: Two-Song NF (Rock vs. Ballad)

Okay, time to get some life back in this thread! I'll put some comments on the editions I've been quiet for and then a mini-NF, so buckle up.

WV93: Eri Sasaki - Fuyu Biyori

I adored this warm little folk piece from the first time I heard it - which was just about at the turn of the year. The strings, the vocals, the gentle guitar riffs; this is the perfect song to just sit back and relax to as you're all rugged up on a lazy winter day! Which just so happens to be what the song's all about. And hey, it might not have been thematically accurate to send it in May for most of the world, but I'm in Australia, so it's fine xshifty

Similarly to many of my previous entries, I came across this when it was used for an anime theme (here, the ending to Yuru Camp), but this time, a miracle happened: the Japanese record label was actually willing to upload a music video, for free, on YouTube, without region blocking! Seriously, it's way too rare that we actually get that from Japanese music labels of any kind, anime or regular, and I'm hoping to see more of it in future. It's nice to be able to send entries with an actual moving, non-Vimeo music video.

As for the results... well, it sure did flop! Second-last in regular, second-last in REJU, and my new record low score. I didn't expect this to light up the scoreboard by any means, but I was surprised to see it finishing that low. Nonetheless, I'm glad to have given it a try - and the pain of this flop was soon alleviated, because...

WV94: Yoshiaki Fujisawa - Shinsha

Fifth place! That might not be too amazing for some of WV's more successful players, but I was very pleasantly surprised indeed to make it, and it marks my highest-ever finish in the contest since joining 30 editions ago (and Japan's highest WV finish, period). Granted, I've had higher scores before - on three occasions, in fact - but with this being a very tight final, I suppose the still-impressive figure of 136 points was enough to reach fifth.

To talk a little about the song itself - it's a beautiful string piece, I think it's about a minute too short, I found it via an anime soundtrack (Houseki no Kuni), et cetera et cetera. The usual. Really, though, I do absolutely love the haunting, restrained sound of this one, and the Chinese-inspired ethnic elements add an extra special something. I never thought it'd do this well, and truth be told I do prefer some of my previous instrumental entries at the contest, but this is still something I've had on repeat for a while now and I'm thrilled to see it do so well.

Don't be too surprised if you see the composer back at some time in the future - I've got a few more Yoshiaki Fujisawa pieces of the same quality where that one came from!

Thanks a heap to all who supported the song:

WV95 Two Song-NF: Rock vs. Ballad

It's finally time for another Japanese NF after far too long away - and we're starting off small, since I know I've left it a little late to put this up. I was considering doing a larger genre-specific NF, either for ballads or rock songs, but decided at the last minute to choose one of my favourites from each of the planned NF lineups and put them head-to-head.

Both of the two are returnees, in a way. I first sent bilingual rocker nano back in WV83 with Bull's Eye, which was #robbed came a fairly respectable 11th in its semi. She returns with Nevereverland, a similarly epic orchestral rock piece that flits between genres and languages alike and is perhaps the singer's biggest hit.

Rita herself hasn't been at WV before, but Jun Maeda - who composed this new NF entry alongside Manack - was also the composer for my WV76 entry Distant Years, WV72's Aozora and a smattering of previous NF entries. The entry as a whole also has ties to Ryo Mizutsuki - who composed my WV67 and WV81 entries - through the studio Key. They return here with the singer Rita to present Haruka Kanata, an atmospheric and emotional piano-based ballad.

1. nano - Nevereverland

2. Rita - Haruka Kanata

Voting is simple: as with my last mini-NF, simply give each song a score out of 10. That's all! Decimals are allowed (though I'll round them off if you get too weird), comments are highly welcome but not necessary, the usual. Votes will probably close around a day before the entry submission deadline, but it depends on when specifically that's going to be.

I look forward to your votes!

Who said "mention spam"? Anyone? Oh, it was me. I said "mention spam".

Yes, it's time for me to throw out some names and see if anyone else is willing to give this little NF a try. There's no obligation, of course, but votes would be very much appreciated! I haven't held many NFs lately, but here are some of my usual voters, or others who I think might be interested: daniels1000 EurovisionSmile Fierro JChan John1 JSSArcos lavieenrose Nicholas123 Ringdalen Stargazer Uvaro whiteshoes

Apologies to any of the above if you're on break or something and I haven't noticed. And of course, votes are more than welcome from anyone, regardless of whether or not I've mentioned you here :) Neither song has managed to grab much of a lead yet - the scores are still super-close, so anyone who votes will probably have a decent impact on the result.

In other NF-related things, many thanks to my two newest voters, :paci::au:. And note that the deadline has been set for 04:00 CET on the 24th of June, i.e. about half a day before entries have to be submitted.

Thanks again to my three most recent voters: ::onta:gr::ru:! Somehow things are still really close, and it's not even that one song has fallen behind and then caught up or something - I don't think there's even been a five-point lead this whole time

Rounded to the nearest point (so that people can't figure out which song is which based on half-points and such), the current scores are... 62 > 59. It's still anyone's game!

Thanks for the votes, :kr:!

The songs are now separated by... 0.3 points. So this is just a mention that I'm willing to accept any late votes just in case, since this really doesn't feel like a conclusive result right now

Re: Japan | 日本 | WV95: nano - Nevereverland

WV95: nano - Nevereverland

Firstly, I apologise for breaking Zobo Green Room tradition by actually having this post up within a semi-reasonable timeframe. Now, before getting on to anything else, let's have a look at the NF results:

KR59ci1.png

THIS. WAS. SO. CLOSE. Aaaaargh.

As I said a number of times throughout the NF period, neither song really pulled ahead by more than a few points at any time, and things then only got closer towards the end. Close NFs are a whole lot of fun to watch, but it's also nice to see a confident margin of support for the winning song, so I kept wondering which one would edge ahead. And the answer was... neither one, really! This was pretty much how things went down towards the end:

 • Eight voters in, I'm refreshing my inbox fairly constantly to see where things go. Haruka Kanata is ahead by 2.7 points - which is at least something, but it's not much, so I'm curious to see where things go, and maybe hoping for a more reassuring victory margin for either song.
 • I wake up the next day to see Uvaro's pushed Nevereverland into the lead by a total of 0.3 points. On one hand: Yay, votes! Always nice to have them. On the other: "Well, that sure complicates things further."
 • I check the thread - Calvin says he's going to vote later! Well, at least that'll make the margin bigger one way or another, whatever happens. Right? Surely.
 • Calvin narrows the lead to 0.1 points. The NF ends.

Damn it, lavieenrose.

Seriously though, I'm not sure I've ever had such an unclear verdict on the winning song. I've had a couple of NF ties before (WV65 and WV75), but in WV75 my voting system made that outcome pretty likely to begin with and in WV65 I had a very clear choice as to what I preferred to break the tie. This was just... 75.6-75.5. With a voting system that was supposed to be more granular. Well.

Another interesting thing I noted with the results was that Nevereverland nabbed the win despite only being the favourite of four voters, as opposed to the six that preferred Haruka Kanata. But those who preferred Nevereverland generally had some stronger preferences, and so it just barely scraped a win in the end.

One more thanks to all ten of my NF voters: ::sg:en::ba:de:paci::au:::onta:gr::ru::kr::kant:

Whatever happened, I'm happy with the winning song (which was guaranteed, as I love them both), and I look forward to seeing how it'll fare at WV (I'm guessing a narrow NQ, but hey, who knows?). Also, given how close things were, I don't think this is the last that WV will be seeing of Haruka Kanata.

Anyways, it's time to stop waffling about the NF and get onto some more about the actual song and singer!

WS30lBn.jpg

I don't think I ever ended up making a proper green room post when I first sent nano with Bull's Eye in WV83, so let's give a brief run-down on the artist now. The Japanese singer was born and raised in the U.S. until moving back to Japan in her early teens, making her perfectly bilingual in the languages of both countries - a rare trait in Japanese singers. She uses this to her advantage, adding bilingual elements to most of her songs, and has a focus on rock.

nano started out around a decade ago by covering both Japanese and English songs on sites like YouTube, where she gained a following and was later discovered by the Flying Dog record label. Until recently, she kept her face and gender hidden, wearing large hoods, long hair and careful angles whenever appearing live or in video clips. This, she says, was to try and establish herself for her music without letting things like her appearance have any influence. Having since made a name for herself, though, she's now become more open with this.

Released around five years ago, Nevereverland remains one of nano's better-known songs, and is great at showing off her usual blend of languages, genres and more. Unexpectedly (especially coming from one of my entries), Nevereverland was released as just a regular song with no real ties to anime, games or the like despite the anime-styled music video – unlike Bull's Eye, which came from an anime series despite its regular live-action video. Perhaps that was her trying to distance the great song from what was a rather mediocre anime series?

Truth be told, I'm not quite sure as to the song's overall meaning (though given how routinely terrible I am at deciphering song lyrics, even in English, that's nothing new or unexpected). Nonetheless, I've tried my hand at a lyric translation below, so take a look if you're interested.

"Do you believe a world of happy endings?"
Even when the road seems long
Every breath you take will lead you closer to
A special place within
Your Neverever...

I wake to a siren pounding at my eardrums
And stifle my voice as it tries to cry out
Clueless, I can only focus on the sound of my heartbeat
And fall into the trap that reality has laid

I won't have any regrets
Looking at the future I'd planned as it lies in tatters
I hold my breath, and the memories I'd locked away
Start to swarm around in my head

As I close my eyes
Leaving no tracks, making no sound, with no destination
I know that this is what I want, this is what I need
Visions of you still echoing in my head
We've been hurt before, and we still can't heal
It's a roundabout, every day the same
But that ends today
So now, this is what I'd longed for
My Nevereverland

Your words pierce through me like a knife while I wander
Like they're laughing at my pain
Unable to do anything, I swallow my trembling voice
And fall into the trap that loneliness has laid

Walking lost, I stumble, and lose my grip on reality
Crazed, my heart steps up to the stage of a tear-stained tragedy
And lurches madly about

As I take your hand
I make a break for it, the memories in my heart fading
I know that this is what I want, this is what I need
Visions of you still echoing in my head
The twisted world I've leapt into still won't let me go
It's a roundabout, every day the same
But that ends today
So now, this is what I'd longed for
My Nevereverland

I wake up, and like light filtering through tree leaves
I start to see again
Once again, the dreams I'd thought had all come true
Crumble away

As I close my eyes
Leaving no tracks, making no sound, with no destination
I know that this is what I want, this is what I need
Visions of you still echoing in my head
We've been hurt before, and we still can't heal
It's a roundabout, every day the same
But that ends today
So now, this is what I'd longed for
My Nevereverland

Re: Japan | 日本 | WV96: Rita - Haruka Kanata

WV96: Rita - Haruka Kanata

And so the NF runner-up manages to qualify the edition after the winner NQs. I can say this, of course, because I'm posting my green room post roughly a week too late and the semis are over... but better late then never, eh? Anyways, I might be late, but thought I should post something here for a song I just adore (truth be told, this did come to edge out Nevereverland in my mind as the NF went on – and so especially with things being so close there, I felt the need to force it through).

Posting this when I am, I can say – thanks so much for helping me get this through to the final! It's one of my favourites out of the thirty-something entries I've sent to WV so far, so I'm thrilled to see it getting some appreciation here (wherever it ends in the final).

To be honest, I don't know all that much about Haruka Kanata's singer, Rita; this is one of those cases where I heard a song through a soundtrack and came to love it through there. Specifically, the song plays during visual novel Little Busters – which has come to be regarded as sort of a classic in the medium – at the story's emotional climax (which is no big surprise, really, given that it comes after 50+ hours and half a million words of buildup). Haruka Kanata accentuates the moment perfectly, I think, and I've loved it since first hearing it... I dunno, five years ago? Something like that.

Musically, the song has links to a bunch of my previous WV entries; composer Jun Maeda was also behind my WV72 and WV76 songs, as well as being the boss and stylistic inspiration of WV67/WV81 composer Ryo Mizutsuki at KEY. KEY has a knack for atmospheric and emotional pieces, I think, and this now makes the fifth entry I've sent from them... with plenty more to come. I like their style, okay? xshifty

Lyrically... well, the whole thing ties in to the plot of Little Busters and its aforementioned 50-hour buildup, which makes it a little hard to explain. To simplify things, though, the song takes the perspective of someone who's raised a couple of children for a long time while struggling with a major illness, and is now ready to let go and pass on after seeing them raised well. I've tried to translate the (rather vague, in parts) lyrics below; feel free to take a read, and thanks again for supporting the entry!

Walking this path time and time again
Has left me exhausted
But I never stopped reaching out to you
From this place where no light shines

Thank you; it's all ending now
Goodbye, my treasures
Stuck here in the darkness
I kept on waiting
And now I'm left alone

However far away you are
Whatever light remains
I hold on, crossing a thousand stars
Seeing you smile, I can smile too
Thinking of those days under a clear sky

You always hid behind me
Peeking out from my side
I wonder how the world looked from back there
Did you still enjoy it all?
Could you see the rainbow?

However far away it is
Everything comes to an end
I'll move forward, heading past the rainbow
As long as you're smiling, I can smile too
I'll see you on that distant summer day

However far away you are
Even if I can't see the light
I'll take hold of it, crossing through time
As long as you're smiling, I'm sure everyone will too
I never thought I'd live to see the day

Re: Japan | 日本 | WV96: Rita - Haruka Kanata

Rita icon. It's absolutely no surprise to me that Rita managed to make the final even when her NF rival couldn't. I was shocked enough when she didn't win the NF, but these things can sometimes result in the song with not the very best chances of doing well being picked. It all depends on who voted I guess. I got 3rd place a while back with an NF loser, when the song that beat it in the NF managed 14th beforehand.

Anyway, this song is beautiful! And the lyrics are so sad:cry: I'm really pleased to see this make the final for you, and I hope it does nicely there.

Oh - I'd planned to include this in the original post, but clearly I forgot. There's a piano-only version of the song, also from the original soundtrack, if anyone's interested:

Re: Japan | 日本 | WV96: Rita - Haruka Kanata | WV97 NF: Four Short Soundtracks

WV97 NF: Four Short Soundtracks

I've got so many short songs that I want to send to WV, but I tend to feel a little uneasy selecting them internally, or putting them up against much longer stuff in NFs. And so, I thought, why not make a NF full of shorter songs?

This led me to choose four songs - all from soundtracks, mostly instrumental - to pit against each other for WV97. In terms of average quality, this is perhaps my favourite NF yet: I've loved each of these bite-sized gems for years, and I've racked up about 300 listens between the four of them. Each one is worth sending internally, I think, and so whatever misses out here may well pop up again in the future. Anyway! Let's get on with it.

The Entries

1. Yukari Hashimoto - Yasashisa no Ashioto

2. Yoshihisa Hirano & Hideki Taniuchi - Death Note Theme

3. Kousuke Yamashita - Chihayafuru Main Theme (Piano Version)

4. Yuki Kajiura - Decretum

NF Recap

Voting System

Divide 12 points up between the four songs, with no more than 6 points to any one song. For example: 6-4-2-0, or 5-5-1-1, or 4-4-4-0, etc. As usual, comments are highly welcome but not needed, I'll make some mentions in a couple of days, and the deadline will probably be about half a day before submissions close.

Four songs. Eight(ish) minutes. One winner. Let's go!
