In Germany both people and broadcaster are interested.
In Spain & UK only people are interested.
In France neither of them.
But in Italy it seems that broadcaster is interested in eurovision and trying year by year to make this programm popular to the public.

Are people really that interested in Spain?

Though it's interesting the way the Italian broadcaster puts effort after having withdrawn for 13 years and with more or less zero public interest... it's a mystery to me how they get all these big names on there xshrug

Perhaps RAI attitude has changed xstars Last year they sent the San Remo winner and this year they appear to be doing far more pre contest promo then they ever had before since the comeback, not to mention the more contemporary song xup

Most big name Italian performers, unlike a certain island country , like the idea of performing for over 100 million people ;) The tide is slowly turning and their making all the right moves now the public have to jump on the wagon too xcheer

They are not that big. They are not the likes of Laura Pausini or Jovanotti, who sell way more than Gualazzi, Zilli, Mengoni or Marrone.
And for their music labels it's a cheap way to test them on an international stage, to see if they have a chance abroad or if they are meant to be for the italian music market only.

I don't get how Emma could be credible as an international artist.
Anyway, I reckon she is the most famous singer among the former x-factor/amici contestants and, actually, I quite undestand why they opted for her.

I would say Emma!

But I have been to Rimini for summer holidays last year in August and I thought he is more popular, they played his songs everywhere and even children sang his ESC entry on karaoke every evening in front of the hotel!

Ok, "l'essenziale" was quite a massive hit last year. If we talk about songs I think "l'essenziale" is way more popular than "non è l'inferno","amami" or "calore", if we talk about popularity I believe Emma is more famous than Marco.

Anyway, their songs are in heavy-rotation on the radios.

Top 10 Airplay Album 2013:

1) Marco Mengoni (“#Prontoacorrere”)
2) Neffa (“Molto calmo”)
3) Daft Punk (“Random access memories”)
4) Modà (“Gioia”)
5) Bastille (“Bad blood”)
6) Emma (“Schiena”)
7) Robin Thicke (“Blurred lines”)
8) Max Gazzè (“Sotto casa”)
9) John Newman (“Tribute”)
10) Gianna Nannini (“Inno”)

Have you guys ever heard of Arisa? Maybe it is a little late to say this but I'd want her to represent Italy some year. :)

I agree with you, Emma is more famous. After winning Sanremo and thanks to L'essenziale Marco has gained a huge popularity. He was already famous but now he is actually recognized as a best-seller singer, in his last tour he collected many sold out dates. Speaking generally, Emma is a tv personality too and her love affairs fill the newspapers, everyone knows who she is.

I add some points for discussion making a comparison for our foreign friends.

EMMA
2010 Oltre 150.000+ (3x platinum)
2010 A me piace così 120.000+ (2x platinum)
2011 Sarò libera 150.000+ (3x platinum)
2013 Schiena 120.000+ (2x platinum)

MARCO MENGONI
2009 Dove si vola 70.000 (1x platinum)
2010 Re matto 150.000 (3x platinum)
2011 Solo 2.0 30.000+ (1x gold)
2013 #PRONTOACORRERE 120.000+ (2x platinum)

Sorry but this song isn't doing anything for me...I'll give it 4 points as it isn't exactly terrible either.

Marco was launched through XF and Emma through Amici (in the same year), they both won a Sanremo and both they had another song in Sanremo Top 3 (Arriverà finished in second place, Credimi ancora in third place but the second place was totally mugged by this shameless song

Emma is also a well-know tv personality and she was in an on-off romance triangle which finished for months in all the newspapers. Marco is more low-profile.
