My second favorite after Ukraine this year, I really hope they will go for an ethno-Bop next year, I'm worried Israel might be one of those countries that will regress and play it safer next year but I hope I'm wrong... I would like to hear more of Hebrew though, or Amharic , while it's a fun track, English has a tendency to sometimes cheapen things down for some reason... although I must say that multi-lingual tracks can be a hot mess, but oddly even though this one blends so many languages and styles together, it somehow worked out which is really unusual but a good grade to the producers and songwriters of this entry.

Our sweet Eden Alene performed an acoustic version of "Feker Libi". Thank god, she is selected again for ESC 2021. Now just give her another banger, she can do it!!

My review:

ISRAEL 2020 - Eden Alene - Feker Libi: "fun four-part song"

After an overly classic host entry, Israel went back to sending an effort with a bit more personality. Yes, minus 2019 they've sent ethno-pop entries in recent years, but this one stands out for mixing flavours from different parts of the world: thanks to the verses, we head first to Africa with easily recognizable rhythms and instruments to occidental ears, the choruses are on the europop side while the transitions bring a Middle-East feel that's more usual coming from Israel. Past the second chorus, we get back to Africa with a brand new rhythm that injects a welcome fourth part that breaks the structure that might have seemed monotonous otherwise despite its ever-evolving pace. I really appreciate the energy infused in the composition and the fact it changes rhythms and flavours without losing momentum or sounding disjointed. And kudos for this diversity being reflected in the languages used as well: Amharic, English, Hebrew, Arabic... Of course, the whole package is wrapped into a pop framework, which makes it easier to apprehend than straight-up traditional music, and that's okay. The parts I like the most are all the Africa-inspired ones (verses + last part) whereas the weak link of the chain for me is the choruses: they're fine but English lines combined with the eurodance situation make them a bit unseasoned compared to the rest, I don't think they are the hook of the song and I wish they had kept the ethno feel there instead, hence why I'm not 100% into the entry unfortunately.

Nonetheless, this effort remains honourable imo and I agree with Ana Raquel that it was oddly underrated in the odds.

Shout-out to my girl Eden who went through the NF and song selection shows, doing justice to all potential entries like the professionnal she is (unlike a certain Romanian woman...) I like the way she sings, she had energy on stage and - let's not kid ourselves - she's so pretty it's not even funny. I am SUPER glad she's coming back next year because I feel Israelis have a worthy representative in their hands; I'm not sure whether there'll be another song selection show or they'll just pick a track internally, but I sincerely pray they give her the quality entry she deserves. Don't waste her talent on some random unseasoned pop or an half-arsed ethno song, why not go full ethno this time? Keep the languages (except for English) and bring back Ethiopian realness. :)

Prediction-wise, I know the first semi was crowded but I'm not sure how "Feker Libi" would have failed to qualify, unless it flopped out of nowhere like "Same Heart". "Uno" was the attention whore of the semi and "Cleopatra" did ride the ethno-pop ride a bit, but Israel still didn't have any direct competition in their field to me, "Solovey" was a totally different vibe and the rest of the "mid/uptempo" efforts were Western-sounding. So I'd say Israel would have qualified, unless people would have preferred "Cleopatra" by far or "Uno" would have overshadowed everyone. Once in the final, I guess they would have pulled another 15-20 kind of result depending on their starting position.

I'm looking forward to the next entry, please don't mess it up! :)

This is much, much better than her 2021 entry. It was catchy, memorable, and I think it had the potential to be one of the highlights of the year. This year however.........she will be lucky if she escapes one of the 3 last places in the semi.

7 points.
