How common is it for your country's contestants to sing in English?

I am quite proud of the strong resistance Spain is offering for not to sing in English in the ESC. I think we are the only country that hasn't sung (not once) in English. We just said some things in Shakespeare's native language with Rosa, Soraya, Las Ketchup or La década, just a few phrases.

In Spain is not very usual to sing in English in our musical market, we have just some few groups which try, such as Dover, Russian Red, Enrique Iglesias...

From the ESC the only one who tries to sing in English, but because she had formerly been a stewardess, is Soraya. She does speak English with quite a good accent.

2009 is half Spanish, half English, the chorus that is.
Though that song was so incredibly bad, I'm happy to look past that ;)

We sent one song in Irish and the rest have been solely in English. Any song in Irish in the NF, well that is, if it makes it to the NF, is shot down by the audience as useless music and although I haven't seen a song in any of our NFs in a language that wasn't one of the national languages, I'm sure that if one was entered in a different language, it would flounder before it even left Dublin. It reflects the nation's attitude towards Irish and foreign languages really, oddly enough for something most of the country seems to deride as continental nonsense.

... and that one entry happens to be your best to date!!

I will never understand why Ireland kills its own historical language like that, it's such a shame and I think the government should step in and FORCE Irishzation on Ireland!!!

I mean with this attitude why not just become a part of the UK again?

And your point is? Just because a song wins doesn't mean it's actually the better one, it's all about different taste.

I just went there ;)

ahhh ok, i thought you meant that statistically our best song was as Gaeilge. personally i think Ceol an Ghrá was something terribly old fashioned and dreamy, if it wasn't sung in 1972 i would think it was the theme song to our history of economic and cultural stagnation 1932-1959. nevertheless, to each their own!

Nah, then I would have written something like 'best result to date'.

Well, honestly though how many songs in ESC during the 70's actually sounded 'up to date' or current for its time? ESC was always years behind the contemporary music of its time, especially back then.

Yup, each to their own :)

Germany was one of the pioniers of using foreign languages in ESC ... Already in the 1960s we sometimes mixed up German lyrics with foreign words

In the last 10 years we always send english entries (expect 2007) ...

I'm really not happy about it. Language is a part of culture and differs a country from another country... I think we should be proud of our language and show it to whole Europe. German isn't considered as a melodic or beutiful language, so it's time to prove the opposite. We should'nt forget that two of the funniest entries from Germany was in - more or less - german language (Wadde hadde dude da, Guildo hat euch lieb)
Look at the other members of Big 5.. France, Spain, Italy... they don't hide their languages.. it's enviable. :(

Agreed and signed. The hatred against their own language is unbelievable. Just look at the jury votes in this year's national final: All four songs that weren't in English (three of them in German) were put to the four bottom places. It wasn't much different in the years before either. I've always been thinking that things might look a bit different if another ARD broadcaster (e.g. MDR or BR) or the ZDF was in charge. But since NDR have been successful recently with their strategy I fear there is no chance of getting rid of them soon.
Moreover this must be viewed especially critical considering that the Öffentlich-rechtliche (ARD, ZDF) have an educational mandate and German viewers have to pay fees for it. Someone explain me the link between Glorious and education.

My country has always sent english entries, except for one in Irish in 1972 :)

My grandpa have a vinyl of Ceo an grah, I remember listening to that song as a toddler in 1989.
I only new its a Eurovision song around 2012.
