Yoooo, are we fire this year or what. Walk that walk, Chris
Eh, not sure if this is a formula to success – looking at Cascada, No Angels, Alex C. etc.
And I know you talk about "well-established" artists, but actually all of our acts had a lot of free reign on how they wanted to present themselves, NDR barely had a hand in it. Authenticity was never an issue – well, except for the siblings who were not siblings I suppose. Sometimes it works (Michael), sometimes you get Levina in her perfect grey life or Jamie-Lee as the manga-girl in a laser forest.
The latter also talked about her ESC experience one or two years ago on reddit. She actually wished someone would've told her "no" to some of her ideas, NDR was basically too supportive and not strict enough
And then there were of course our newbies Roman and Lena who had Thomas D. and Stefan by their side which was a great combination in my book – new faces / young and hungry singers with competent guidance.
I think it doesn't matter if we send newcomers or veterans, the concept in general needs to function. And it all doesn't matter anyway if the song is hopeless in the first place, poor Malik
I knew someone would bring up Cascada, No Angels, etc.
Of course, I agree with you when you say that newcomers can be very successful at Eurovision as well. It was a success when we sent Lena or Roman and other countries even won with newcomers as well, e.g.
Duncan Laurence.
I still believe that the chance is "bigger" to get a better package by submitting well-established artists who have (almost) full control.
Lord Of The Lost wanted to take part for years - they kept on submitting songs to NDR and got neglected from participating in our national finals in favor of the likes of Levina, Jamie-Lee, Ann-Sophie, S!ster, Aly Ryan and more people whose names I can´t even remember...
When it comes to
NO ANGELS, they might have been one of the most successful acts in Germany but they had limited control and the whole package wasn´t right: The song was not authentic and not written by themselves. I remember an interview in which Sandy (?) revealed that their management made them decide to either "participate in Eurovision or coming up with a new casting show to search for a 5th member to replace Vanessa". During rehearsals, Jessica got really sick and missed out and as a result, they sounded horribly and got overshadowed by "Qele, Qele" which powered straight after them.
Their entry "Disappear" is a mid-tempo, generic radio-friendly tune - something which could have been part of our tragic national final 2017.
I´m happy about Cascada´s participation, though. FINALLY, Germany tried something differently and sent a dance pop song with EDM influences. The staging wasn´t right, though (her outfit didn´t fit her persona) and the song was a bit too similar to "Euphoria" (even though they were songs of the same genre but still different). But at least, we tried.
Alex C. might have been a well-established act but he´s not a good performer and doesn´t sing at all and again, he asked a newcomer to perform his own song.
What I want to see in the future: More well-established acts who have (full) control of their music, outfits, visuals (of course, they can get help by other professionals but I just think that people at NDR are a bit lazy when it comes to staging ideas) and who really want to take part at Eurovision. + no more radio-friendly and generic pop songs.
It doesn´t mean that newcomers shouldn´t be part of it - Anisca or Trong (are they really newcomers?) had great ideas how to present their songs as well and I wouldn´t place them into the same Levina/Ann-Sophie category.
