I personally didn't vote for No rules! in the national selection, but it was a strong second best for me, and I fully support the choice we made. This performance is very traditionally Finnish, in a way someone could say that the song from France this year is very French. We embrace the cringe here, our sense of humour is on the stranger side, and this song could have (and probably would have) hit the charts even without being our ESC song. Like Teemu Keisteri (aka Windows95man) said after the semifinal performance, "this is Finland".
We send songs, which we like, and every once in a while, what we like somehow resonates with other Europeans. It's an added bonus, but not the main objective. I've been watching the ESC since mid 80s, and every time we try to send songs we think would do well in the contest, we fail miserably. When we pick the song we like the most, at least we can be happy about our pick.
I think Henri Piispanen does an excellent job with the vocals. Teemu Keisteri is the artist behind the entire performance, and I think his ability to look effortlessy cringey on purpose, while bringing a smile to our faces, is something to applaud. For some, this song might be just trash, but if that is the case, I'm glad to be trashy.
