I thought the 80‘s vibes music was over by now, what‘s happening this NF season?

It´s shifting towards 90´s now (with all these absolutely horrible samples. Just look at what all these DJ´s and basic singers did to ALANE and BLUE (DA BA DEE).
So who knows... maybe Gustaph will indeed surprise us all with his mid 90´s boyband-ish pop dance entry :D

Indeed, also not for me because I think recreating the 90‘s just doesn’t work, but I feel like a LOT of Acts this Season in NFs are borrowing from the 80‘s.

I just noticed that Finland was doing everything right when it comes to the professional experts to choose thier UMK finalists.

Apart from UMK´s producer, there was a vocal coach, heads of music and broadcasting companies, a music journalist and the senior editior of SPOTIFY Finland involved.

Personally, I would have added a professor of music (someone who might be more open to classical/alternative songs focussing on composition) but apart from that, it´s a super diverse panel - and I´m impressed that SPOTIFY Finland got involved - that´s probably why UMK has delivered so many well-produced and contempory tracks - at least they don´t sound like radio songs from a decade ago :D

I agree with you - The 80´s inspired trend in pop music, however, hasn´t died yet and we always have to take into account that artists have had their songs ready like weeks/months ago (and they might have started working on the tracks earlier than that).

Additionally, Eurovision has sometimes been a bit behind musicl trends. Songs which got submitted to the broadcasters a few months ago will be presented to the audience in May, and how did they get picked? By expert panels consisting of real people... they also need to get accustomed to certain trends before they actually believe that song submission "A" would be a great pick for Eurovision/a national final because "that trend is en vogue" right now... it can even get ridiculously "dangerous" for some broadcasters if they ask radio bosses to pick their entries.

The same applies to the "professional" juries in Eurovision.
They robbed Dubstep which was still fresh in 2013 (it appeared in mainstream music around early 2011 and was the dominating trend in 2013) but thought it was cool in 2014 (and voted for Armenia; there are even glimpses of that genre in Hungary´s chorus "Running"- both songs got ranked in the juries´Top 5) whilst the trend has massively slowed down in pop music... but it was still "fresh and contemporary" in the head of ordinary/middle aged people who were part of the juries (I believe).

All in all, I don´t think that 80´s inspired music will be perceived as "old-fashioned" this year - it may even get boosted by the juries in the final :D

Well that is a whole heap of nothing. Keira and Benjamin are far stronger and better than that.

Really, it hasn‘t died? I admit I don’t follow trends that much but I didn’t come across 80‘s inspired brand new Songs for months now. However, I don’t mind the occasional 80‘s vibe. It’s just when it’s every second NF Song, I start collectively hating them all cause it’s just too much.

Robin is my number three at UMK so far. I believe the bookmakers had him in first place which is not a good sign of what is yet to come.

Oh, Robin... I haven't been a fan of his music ever but I know that he has better songs than this. The name of the song was alarming to me and it delivered that kind of generic pop song vibes I thought...

I don't hate this, I don't love this... It just exists and exits. You could say like some pop songs in Melodifestivalen. 2/5 for me. It sounded promising that some Finns' reactions are a bit on the same side, Robin may not be our representative, because of his somewhat big name... We'll see...

I'll wait for live performance, I know for sure Robin can sing compared to Benjamin. Keira can be a hit or flop. For now: 1. Benjamin. 2. Keira and 3. Robin.

My hopes are in Lxandra and Kuumaa!! Käärijä and Portion Boys are extra and can surprise me completedly. :giggle:

Yeah, it´s not that prominent anymore and it has slightly shifted, e.g. MonstaX´s just released a new single and took 80`s rock elements ("Beautiful Liar") .. and even the "80´s inspired pop music" is still en vogue - that´s a new song released this week (and advertised by MTV):

And the likes of Ava Max and The Weeknd still continue releasing 80´s inspired pop songs.

But again, I agree with you - it´s slowly vanishing (still prominent, though).

Let´s wait and see if NDR will provide us some 80´s pop songs as well :D

A big disappointed for UMK's biggest favourite to win UMK. Robin's Song hasn't anything interesting. I hopea, that we don't choose this to represent us on Eurovision.

1. Keira :12:
2. Benjamin :8:
3. Robin :6:

The falsettod chorus tanks Robin's song for me. It's not catchy enough in one listen, nor a singalong one. I hope the other four songs can serve better.
