1864 - Danish history drama with many passages about nationalism, national self images, war, heroism, civil rights, women's right, economic equality etc etc.
The series portrays the events surrounding the
Second Schleswig War winter 1864, a war provoked (as I understand) by Danish
national-liberal politicians by forcing nationalist issues on the mixed language
Schleswig duchy. Among other things, the events led to the death of
political Scandinavism.
As a swede I guess I miss out some of the political fine details and references targeted to the Danish audience, but I find them extremely interesting. The series is I would say
massively anti-nationalistic and I guess contains many arguments against the fake fabricated patriotism of the current Danish far right. At the same time I find it very patriotic and perhaps aiming at restoring the Danish self image for the majority of the people. Tainted with sticky awkwardness, racism and exclusiveness as it is by the far right. It rises the questions: What is a true Dane? What is Danishness? Finally as always, Danish TV is excellent in production.
The series has been co-financed by Swedish (TV4), Norwegian and German TV channels (broadcast in Sweden "sometime" during 2015 by TV4).
