Yes, you're right, it's definitely not representative at all given a nation that shows up several times in your tops can have less points than one that scores big once. How do you calculate average placings? I would like to do that as well actually.

I do it in excel.

example from 2010 to 2019:
placings 13+11+9+6+32+15+37+17+10 equals 150 divided by 9 participations = 16,67

the lower the number, the better

even that system has a flaw, because some years are better than others...

Indeed it cannot be perfect due to the variable quality from one edition to another (and nations withdrawing), yet it remains the best way of assessing the consistency of a nation.

The only thing is it requires full rankings, which I don't have.

I'll try to work on that when I have time.

I recently found some old rankings that I had done a few years ago for all the editions but they aren't entirely accurate cause I had listened to the songs of every year only once but I decided to include these too. So I separated the ranking in pre 2004 and post 2004 cause it's made by average placement and it would be unfair to compare contests with 20 entries to contests with 40 entries.
I counted all the countries with at least 3 entries in each category and the others will just be honourable mentions.
