Please post any and all discussions regarding the contest itself, host country and city, organisation, rumours and other topics not related to any specific country's selection process.

If we're lucky, we wont have a Day without Song from now on.

Is this year going to be one of the worst ever editions for ESC? The 11 songs that have been released so far, none of them has met my expectations.

If I am going to group these 11 songs into bands - "Excellent", "Good", "Decent", "Mediocre" and "Bad', none will make it to the "Excellent" band.

"Excellent" - None
"Good" - Lithuania
"Decent" - Norway, Spain, Australia, Belgium, Albania
"Mediocre" - Italy, France, Czech Republic
"Bad" - Latvia, Armenia

Following my initial assessment of the competition, so far the reveals are still quite underwhelming. Only Germany has truly shocked me. Israel is definitely serving it, the 4 songs are really good. I would be happy with any choice.

My buckets of songs so far:
"Excellent" - None
"Good" - Lithuania, Germany, Australia (Upgraded), Albania (Upgraded)
"Decent" - Norway, Spain, Belgium, United Kingdom, Italy (Upgraded)
"Mediocre" - France, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovenia, Ukraine
"Bad" - Latvia, Armenia

For me, the overall selection seems to be better than last year, but my top 10 is definitely weaker (and by a huge margin). There are still many entries to be revealed/selected so I hope it will turn out.

2019 average
Overall : 5,7 pts
Top 10 : 9 pts

2020 average
Overall : 5,7 pts
Top 10 : 7,3 pts

I think now it is quite obvious that the ESC will not take place in may. Corona arrived all around Europe and will not disappear within two months.

I might have to agree that chances of postponement might be high, although I still believe that it's still up to their Health Ministry's decision to make it happen. Might be interesting to have a chance to see the first Eurovision in June/July.

SIDE NOTE: Aside of that, the theory that COVID19 escapes from a virus test facility in China seems interesting enough to be true.

Switzerland did cancel already all major events with more than 1000 participants, at least for now.

There are still many options which I’m sure the EBU would prefer to outright cancellation
  • The contest could take place in a smaller venue with a much smaller crowd, similar to the 90s
  • Reducing the number of rehearsals/the amount of time artists are required to be present
  • Postponing the contest to a later month
  • Perhaps even making the 2020 edition an online only contest
I’m sure the EBU and the Dutch broadcaster are already in too deep to cancel the show completely.

As far as Eurovision and Corona are concerned, at this point I feel that there are three options which have already been mentioned but, you know discussions! Sharing ideas!

1) The event goes ahead on a smaller scale with significant levels of scanning and what have you to ensure there is as little risk of the illness spreading; maybe that means fewer people being allowed to attend and more footage of "Lets see whats happening at the fan zone in Berlin!" or whatever to make up for the lower attendance or at an absolute push not allowing any members of the public to attend the event and only people connected to the acts and the show being the audience, effectively doing the show behind closed doors.

2) Postpone the event to the Summer or possibly the Winter at worst and simply holding the event then when hopefully the illness has subsided enough to be safe to host the event. It would be costly to do so (But then all the options are), building hype for the event would be far more difficult as by the middle of next month we'll know every act and song so by the date that the event takes place people might just be sick of them. It also means that who ever wins and hosts next year will have less time to plan and get the event off the ground unless they just move the contest to that time of year for good.

3) They do the event remotely with each nation's act performing at a small event/TV studio in their home nation and the footage is streamed live to the event. The problem with at is that it means that each nation will have to effectively host their own mini-Eurovision at the last minuet and many nations will not have access to the kind of staging and finances needed to make their act look and sound the way they wanted it to do on the night and if we lose connection during one of the performances, well, then what? They do it again? Or are they all just pre-recorded just in case? They record the Jury show then broadcast that if something happens? It would be a lot of work to do this, work that some nations for all the will in the world might struggle with and could easily go wrong.

I do hope the event isn't cancelled as, as has been already pointed out, a lot of time and money has already been invested into this and we are too close really at this point to just outright cancel it without some fall back plan in place.

The model will be the football games in Italy. No audience.
In the end it's a television show.

As far as it goes, I don't think the Netherlands would let go of not hosting in their famous arena easily after 40 years of not winning. Maybe we'll still see the contest going in Ahoy.
