Tervist!

Now you are wondering, maybe even muttering: why is he wasting time on those early millennium years? Believe me, I'm really starting to call that in question myself. I guess I have a couple of incentives for starting these threads:

1. I think every year deserve, if not their own sub-forum, so at least one dedicated thread.

2. I haven't actually listened at those songs since back then, and so it's like I haven't heard many of them before. Not much to discover, obviously, but that's what I'm doing - re-discovering. In other words, I'm trying to find (CD-versions only) something at least decent that my nowadays settled taste in music may approve of, as it has changed very much since I was a teenager.

3. Most of us also want personal rankings from every year. I have to begin somewhere...

Whatever your incentives to contribute to this thread - just do it! Post Your top 10 or simply comment on anything from this edition.

----------------------------------

Here is what I think.

If 2001 was a weak year, then it was still decent in comparison to this Tallinn-misery. I have eight entries from 2000 that are better than this apathetic line-up, and I have four entries from 2001 that are better than this vapid soup of near oki-dokies. And I'm really trying my hardest to find something enjoyable, something extra that makes me want more.

It's a pity Latvia finally won when I think they had the best entries in both 2000 and 2001. This one - "I Wanna" - is too ordinarily catchy and so nothing but plain. I had to brush it aside pretty quick.

The other entries that I gave another shot was from :gr:, :ee:, :se:, :dk:, and :lt:. If I had to pick a winner, I must draw attention to the slightly unexpected electro-element in "Happy You" from Lithuania.

Conclusion: A bunch of polite pop-templets, and one pretty good from :lt: - Aivaras - Happy You. The worst year in the 21st!

Shoot!

As much as we want to give avery decade or year a Sub Forum, there is just not that much interest by fans to discuss the old day it seems otherwise we'd have it. But heck, look at the 2009 thread nobody cares even about that one anymore ;). And there is nothing worse than dead forums.

2002 was a major improvement and there were quite a few songs I enjoyed. My favorite was :fr: for a second year in a row. It ended up in the Top 5 which was okay though I thought it deserved much better. Actually my four favorites all ended up in the Top 5 but then :lv: had to spoil it and with the whole thing, the song was utter trash and I wished we had juries back then. :mt: was definitely my guilty pleasure that year. No master piece and quite corny but I couldn't help it, I just liked it. :uk: & :ee: both had fun entries too, why couldn't any of these songs could have won?
I remember I was so mad and turned off my monitor after it became apparent that Latvia would win.

Overall I have fond memories of this one cause it was the first contest I watched online after I moved from Germany to the United States and it really brought a lot of joy to me and helped me from getting overly homesick.

Totally agree with you here. But where a sub-forum isn't justified, as in this case, a thread will be enough. It's understandable those years are no longer very interesting to discuss one by one. Every now and then though, I think people will return to earlier years and give their points. :)

I really liked :fr: in 2000 and 2001, as you could see, but this one is just too darn slow for me. It's like Quedate conmigo in super-slow motion. Or something like that... xshifty

2002 was probably the worst edition of the decade, but remember it especially because it's the most watched in Spain. ESC 2002 had actually the highest ratings ever until Spanish football team won Euro 2008 and World Cup 2010.
There was a real fever here with Rosa and most press acreditations in Tallin were for Spaniards :lol:

After some year I don't get why we all thought we were going to win with such a lame song :lol:

Latvian winner was lame too, but better than 2001 winner. It was an absolute surprise cause I remember the faves were Sweden, Germany and Spain and neither of them was top-5. My absolutely fave was Estonia.

By far, far, far, far the worst winner the ESC has ever seen. "I Wanna" is just so unbelievably bad, it boggles the mind to think people actually spent money to vote for that crap.

Otherwise it's a more enjoyable year than 2001, I like most of the songs, notably Turkey, Estonia, France, Spain and Malta. The latter's is such a weak girly song (say, a Hilary Duff B-Side), but I love it.

I'm also ashamed to admit it, but I like the studio version of "Northern Girl" but the live performance was such a catastrophe that S.A.G.A.P.O. is a masterpiece next to it.

That was the year when I really got into Eurovision... I didn't think we stood a chance so when we ended up fighting with Latvia during the voting, I was amazed and flabbergasted!!! Grrr.... Marie N :twisted:

I liked the stage and the postcards were cheesy but fun!

:ee:, :uk:, :fr: were amazing. :sl:, :lt: and :gr: not much...

2002 is special to me because it was in beloved Estonia (though the hosts were horrible ! :eek:). The staging is criticised among fans but I love it ! It was a special year with the fort Eastern to host the country... And the first before many others ! ;)
Plus Estonia is the second smallest country to have hosted ESC after Luxemburg, so it's not to be expected something like Russia or so... ! :)
Plus, in 2002, we had a great song, I'm not ashamed to put it as my number 1 ! :) We also were very concerned with ESC in 2002 after Natasha St-Pier great placing... But Sandrine François never knew success after Eurovision... :(

:12: :fr: Sandrine François - Il faut du temps (one of our greatest entries ever ! :) )
:10: :mt: Ira Losco - Seventh wonder (very nice song)
:8: :uk: Jessica Garlick - Baby come back (great masterpiece)
:7: :hr: Vesna Pisarovic - Everything I want (I'm found of it ! I wish vesna could come back to ESC ! :) )
:6: :dk: Mahlene - Tell me who you are (Undeserved last placing... :( )
:5: :de: Corinna May - I can't live without music (::oops:: It's aweful, I know... Guilty pleasure category... :? :lol: )
:4: :mk: Karolina Goceva - Od nas zavisim (very good song ! :) )
:3: :fi: Laura Voutilainen - Addicted to you (such a great move ! love it !)
:2: :es: Rosa - Europe's living a celebration (cool party number ! :) )
:1: :ru: Premier Ministre - Northern girl (nice song ! :) )

But 2002 had probably the poorest winner ever and was the biggest flop in the Eurovision...

My 3 least ones are :lt: :il: and :gr: 3 horrendous songs ! :lol:

Imo, Marie N´s "I wanna", which won in 2002, is one of the worst winning-songs in ESC-history.

I think it really is the worst. Luxembourg 1983 comes close though.

Another weak year with another undeserving winner

My top. 10 - 2002

:8::uk:
:7::mk:
:6::ee:
:5::se:
:4::dk: (sadly she ruined her live singing, one of the most nervous performances in ESC ever!)

Complete crap year. Latvia deserved the win though, thanks to its amazing performance.
