Here in Belgium, the airport certainly will be closed until 20.00 tonight
but expected maybe to close until monday.

I think many students will have a problem :p

The news say that Zagreb airport is also closed from this morning. The clouds came to northern and western Croatia, and during the day they will continue to spread towards to the east and south of Europe, which means that the whole air space above Croatia will be covered till the end of day. The clouds are invisible for the eyes though.

The German air-traffic control announced that all German airports will be closed until at least tomorrow morning 2 am. Some airports extended this ban until 2 pm tomorrow afternoon. Due to these bans the German chancellor and the minister of defence can't return from their last journeys abroad, Angela Merkel (chancellor) is stuck in Rome and Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg (minister of defence) has to wait in Istanbul.

And here the prognosis of a German newspaper regarding the possible expansion of this cloud at 12 pm.

The national airline of Belgium has declared not to fly until Monday 12.00.
And even if the airport opens , the flights will be disturbed for at least a week)

Ha, that map looks interesting (the one Anjeza posted). That map shows how the wind blows and thus where the particles accumulate. I don't think any flights are of good idea, because these ash particles do not stay at a same height (they are slowly, but surely going down and eventually gonna be deposited). So that means it is not a good idea even for small planes to fly. :| This is now going to impact the economy severely, especially the airlines.
@94ayd, Yes the ships and land transport are alternatives. But think of the economy of what will this cause and also think of the time needed to go from one place to another. I'm not saying this for tourists, but for other things. Tourists can find a way home (if they live somewhere in Europe), or they will have to wait in the airport, which I know how it is and it sucks big time. :| :geek:

I reckon this terrible wind will reach Bulgaria tomorrow. :x It's interesting how Iceland wasn't actually affected at all for most of its territory (judging by the posted map).
Iceland is the most affected by it! Some of the particles have spread around the island. I heard people are wearing masks there. Also, flash floods happen in Iceland. So they are affected a lot. :geek:

They say that the rain will fall, and that will help to get rid of the volcanic dust that came here today.

And that picture is scary

Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO) on Sunday with 17 Ryanair's planes sleeping at the airport cause the cancellation of all operations that day. The northern spanish airports like Barcelona-El Prat or Zaragoza and Girona were closed more or less from 9:00 till 16:00 and then reopened...Fortunately we didn't get that much affected. :D

Today we are beeing an international hub... receiveing planes that couldn't arrives at their destinations, and then from here they go by bus, car, train or boat to central and northern Europe.

I've heard a man spend 4,000 Euros in a taxi for go to Brussels (I guess) from Madrid.

If some one want to see how the cloud goes and which flights are going on... http://www.radarvirtuel.com

Spain seems to benefit from the volcanic explosions in Iceland.  I think this will be quite a punch for the economy (airlines especially). Closing of the airports for days = losing of millions of euros/dollars/whatever. The first ash blow from the volcano was pretty much nothing. And we could expect more coming in. :| One positive impact of this might be that in the future there will be investments in technology, especially in the airplanes (the engines and other parts that would be protected from harmful ash particles from the volcanoes). And this is good, because people in the future will not be powerless against natural stakes. :)
