So... yeah, Nicklas Sonne all the way. xcheer

I'm willing to settle for Eyjaa.. unlike the guy they're singing about

:dk: DMGP 2023 Rankings (Studio Versions)

1. Eyjaa - I Was Gonna Marry Him
2. Søren Torpegaard Lund - Lige her
3. Nicklas Sonne - Freedom
4. Reiley - Breaking My Heart
5. Maia Maia - Beautiful Bullshit
6. Micky Skeel - Glansbillede
7. Mariyah LeBerg - Human
8. Fredirick Leopold - Stuck on You

From first listen Eyjaa is my favorite and would be the way to go. It needs to be staged in the dark western styleor it could be a mess. Søren is a close 2nd and really charmed me. The description didn't lie. It really is a 60's style throwback song with the Skibet skal sejle I nat sound. I think it will be a dark horse for the selection. Nicklas Sonne has a half decent decent rock/metal song.

Reiley wasn't as good in full as it's way to repetitive. Still an ok radio track but nothing more. Maia Maia and Mariyah are the biggest let downs overall. Best DMGP since 2020 but nowhere near that year's level. An improvement though from the past two years.

Good analysis. (y)

I'm a bit concerned about Stuck On You. It could be a dark horse in this. :(

Denmark should choose Eyjaa if they want a shot at the final in Liverpool - I can't see them mess it all up on stage.

There are no bad songs in this DMGP. What's missing are the real bops and the surprises - like what we see in the UMK for instance. I also miss artists that can do something out of the ordinary. That being said, there will be a lot to learn from the live performances. Including how the singers with falsetto parts will perform. Falsetto is always a bit risky.

Anyway, here is my top 8 based on the studio versions:

1. Eyjaa - I Was Gonna Marry Him
(Since Iceland could qualify with three Icelandic women singing a country-inspired song last year, why shouldn't Denmark with these two? Besides, the Danish song is more catchy. The lyrics could be slightly better.)

2. Reiley - Breaking My Heart
(I'm a bit surprised to see this so high up in my ranking. The song reminds me of Ingrosso's in 2018 - I didn't get the hype about that entry at all. But if 'Dance You Off' could do so well, Reiley's song could have a chance too? Especially if he is good at moving around on the stage and - not least - hits the high notes of which there is quite a lot!)

3. Søren Torpegaard Lund - Lige her
(I like how close we are to his voice on this track - you can hear him breathe. That gives the song a special energy. Will it work on stage? There is a risk that the song will sound anonymous. The references to 'Skibet skal sejle i nat' from 1957 are very clever, but I don't know if the average listener will get this.)

4. Maia Maia - Beautiful Bullshit
(It's one of the more upbeat songs in the running, and it's close to being a really good song. It just doesn't quite make it. I have nothing against the song title "Beautiful Bullshit", but it's a bit disappointing if it ends up being "Beautiful B.S." in case it wins.)

5. Nicklas Sonne - Freedom
(Not often do we see a classic rock song at DMGP or Eurovision. When there is rock, there is normally some strong cross-over elements - like Blind Channel in Finland -, but there is too little of that in Sonne's song, so I don't think it will go far. The support from rock fans will not be enough (and do they even watch the DMGP?).)

6. Frederik Leopold - Stuck on You
(It's modern pop - I'll give him that. And depending on the staging, I don't think we should rule him out of a possible top 3 result. But the song is also a bit too basic.)

7. Mariyah LeBerg - Human
(There is a street musician element to this song, and that's sort of charming, but I don't think the melody is strong enough. It's not exactly a modern type of song either.)

8. Micky Skeel - Glansbillede
(This is what you could call a typical Dansk Melodi Grand Prix entry. The song has a classic structure, but when you have a low key song, it really needs a strong melody which I don't think this one has.)

I could see myself listening to all the songs from 1-6 again. It's not a bad line-up. I just miss something that is fun, weird, or stands out.

Thanks for pointing that out! That’s very true. I like the song a lot and I also had that nostalgic vibe when I heard it.

Sorry Denmark, but your best options, which I think are Eyjaa and Nicklas, will barely be a borderline QF in Eurovision and I'm being optimistic...

Ps: What the hell happened to you recently? A country that won Eurovision three times isn't anymore capable of sending something competitive anymore? I don't get it but something there isn't working...

I liked: Mickey Skeel's, Eyjaa's and Reiley's songs from the short studio version clips. Nicklas stood out from the rest too with a rock song but this didn't hit as hard... Nothing outstanding and remarkable in this selection for me, they were all listenable though... I didn't specifically dislike any song. :giggle:

The truth is time is just catching up with Denmark, this was always bound to happen.
Denmark has been known to have the beigest, blandest, safest and most uninspiring selection of songs on their NF for more than a decade now. But before, a middle of the road safe song with a good live performance was enough to do ok at Eurovision because the overall quality was much lower. Nowadays it takes a lot more authenticity and originality to stand out and DR has not been able to keep up.
They need to completely reformulate their approach towards DMGP and the ESC or else Denmark will have a very very tough time even making it to a final in the 2020s.

Tumblr, mostly.
This selection is fine. it's better than last year, I actually like songs this time around. :-)

Can't be bothered to rank them really, but Human isn't allowed to win. :)

If your point is that certain other countries have stepped up while Denmark hasn't, then I agree. Denmark's contest looks a lot like it has done for years - not better, not worse.

Still, it's not that many countries that have improved like Norway and Finland have.

I unironically think that "I Was Gonna Marry Him" is a brilliant entry.
The rest is - like always - quite nice but nothing to write home about (even though I think it´s a way better selection of songs than last year´s edition).

IMHO Danish preselection is not better than the one, it is the same lacklustre level. The only remotely interesting song is I Was Gonna Mary Him by EYJAA.
