Bit off topic, but thought I'd share this. Used dataset for this NF to fiddle around with idea of using 'Transferable Votes' instead of points. Results are below. Stella would still win, but Louis would be second. A transferable vote is basically a race where the one coming last gets dropped from the race. Those who had that song as their number one now vote for the one still available that is highest on their list.

I am unhappy with how NF's are run. Net effect tends to be that decent mainstream songs have a better chance of winning because they are unlikely to get buried. I'm thinking of ways to fix that problem and this dataset has a huge offender in Michalis. Pretty much no one loves that song, but no one hates it so it came second and was close to winning. It's quite obvious though that the second option should be Demetris or Louis.

After the results for transferable votes where Stella edges out Louis in the end I've also added the results where you can just list a favorite and two alternatives. Favorite then gets 5 points and the alternatives get 1 point. Could also be a way to filter out the hopeless mediocre entries that find themselves up there because people just don't hate them. Kind of works, it does filter Demetris and Louis as potential alternatives over Michalis.

@Uto I always looked for a better method of voting in national finals, I once used a system with:
2 points (or ++) to songs you love
1 point (or +) to songs you like
0 points (or /) to songs that leave you indifferent or you dislike.

I used that method in my secret jury pre-NF and the songs in my latest NFs are the "++" of my secret jurors. But I noticed that some songs might not win but some people loved them like songs of Louis and Demetris in this NF. I will most probably choose them as my entries in the near future. I will have only one more NF for next edition and then I'll be choosing my entries internally.

When people vote, it doesn't mean they like all the songs on offer, in fact they may straight up hate a few but want to vote for a certain song. The problem a STV brings is that it could mean in some peoples ranks their 'number 1' ends up being a song they don't like much and therefore possibly swinging results one way or another. This can important in NFs that are very close.

I'm always conscious of people voting for songs they don't like as it can impact the final result. As a general rule I don't use the rank point system like what Fotiana uses, as it doesn't show peoples true feelings for songs. Instead I use a ranking system, whereby I make everyone rank all the songs on a scale of 1 to 10, with a criteria of the scale so they know how low or high to rank (basically so people don't rank a song 10 and then give 1 or 2 at WV). Then with the results I delete every score lower than a 7 and create an average, and it can play a big part in whether the full result winner goes to WV or not. Usually though I just end up sending the top 2. I also ask people to give their opinions of the songs, so I can get an insight at their thoughts of the song. You can see what I mean with a quick duel NF I did a short while back:

With the points below a 7 removed, the score difference increased from 10 points to 18 points.

you can also see here where a 1 point difference changed to a 5 point difference from when I did 6 or below. As well as 3rd dropping a fair bit despite being not far behind either.

For me, I find it the best way to get the 'correct' winner that most of the voters like and stop all them mid to low scores carrying songs to victory. It hasn't done me wrong to date. As in your point of the winner always being mainstream, it is worth noting on the type of people voting in the NF. Rainy a long while back had a NF with the current Northeastern USA entry in, where it come dead last. That was because the people who voted there were almost entirely from pot d, e, f where they rarely enjoy pop or anything mainstream.

This is true. I did consider this, but thought the effect would not be that great. It's just sloppy, the effect can be great and it should just not be there at all. Can also probably be achieved in a satisfactory manner by just capping the amount of transfers.

This is actually a pretty elegant solution. It's not perfect, you're still running into some problems here when people don't rank songs the way you actually intend, but you do get a working filter that should be functional when the amount of voters is decent. I think this is a satisfactory solution to the problem. Now let's hope people read this and follow suit.
