It's impossible to know if Croatia would have qualified via televotes in 2013. I believe they were 10th looking at the average placing but that doesn't mean a whole lot. It's very likely that some countries (Serbia, Montenegro, Slovenia etc) put it rather high in their ranking and everybody else superlow. Having just a few high scores can shift the average but would never be enough to justify qualification.

Yes, you have a point. Nevertheless, the system that was used to determine the plebs' scores this year were the averages and not the old 12 points count. The latter, by the way, tendeth to be more beneficial to big points receivers so as you pointed out that the Croatian entry was likely one of them it is very probable it would of fared even better there. At the end of the day though it is indeed speculation and not really relevant to this matter.

It sucks that you won't be there! :( For me, you always sent songs I like (except Feminem's song), even "Celebrate".

Well considering their semi place in an all televote final (from a quick search)

2009 - no result? :s
2010 - Fail to qualify (14th)
2011 - Fail to qualify (16th)
2012 - Fail to qualify (14th)
2013 - Fail to qualify (13th)

All Jury vote

2009 - no result
2010 - Fail to qualify (12th)
2011 - Fail to qualift (12th)
2012 - Qualify (7th)
2013 - Qualify (10th)

Clearly the Juries have helped Croatia more since its reintroduction than the televotes. Showing they're better off with juries...

In 2009 it wasn't 50/50. The top nine of the televoters qualfiied, plus a wildcard chosen by the juries, that happened to be Croatia.

Anyway it's ridiculous how people are saying that Croatia has withdrawn because of the jury. Croatia literally did much better with them all years, but this last one. But some people are just compeltely biased and cannot even accept that maybe they're (the juries) not the reason for everything that's wrong with Eurovision.

Anyway as for Croatia itself, I would miss some countries more. They have not sent anything outstanding, their last entry that I really liked was "Moja stikla" in 2006, even though 2010 was very nice as well.
According to HRT they will be back soon, maybe even in 2015. Let's hope that they do, and that they come back strong.

I understand that a break isn't always a bad thing, it's just a little disturbing that there have been so many countries withdrawing though most of them were due to financial reasons. In addition, it always sucks for the fans as I have a lot of Croatian friends and not having your own country taking part....it's just not quite the same.

Let's hope Slovenia is not following Croatia's lead (it's the only other country I'm slightly worried about)

RTVSLO said yesterday they will most likely participate.

I am very unhappy about this deicision. I'm missing Hrvatska, ESC without flag with red-white checkerboard will be not the same :( I hope that they will come back in 2015 ;)

Well, this disappoints me and makes me sad...but not in that big amount as I thought this would hurt me as esc fun...Cause basically since 2010. we haven't sent serious entry that competes for good result and in last 3 years it is like we didn't participate...We were just passengers and I didn't have a feel like we are in competition and fighting for something serious...I just hope this will again make people to think about esc and maybe make some positive effects for 2015. and on. ;)

I wonder is there any merit to the idea of bringing back the old system of just one semi final then, at least just for 2014, if a trend like this continues? That is to say, keeping Denmark and the Big Five in the final, along with Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Norway, Russia, Greece, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, and Hungary, and putting the other countries into one semi from which ten qualify? I mean one thing I noticed about last year was that the two semis went by awful fast, and, presuming that no other country will withdraw or debut, and that the rumours that Portugal will return are true, then we will have 39 countries again, the same as in 2005.

This is very sad for me as ESC without :hr: is not the same :( Although it's not too unexpected.

Just like Scooby, I think :rs: is the next country that may pull out (I don't have any inside info, but the situation in RTS is catastrophic and they may easily suffer the fate of ERT).

I don't know, when all those other countries are in one semifinal, it makes it a lot easier to form some voting blocks, because everyone is together. And mostly always the same countries (song good of bad doesn't matter) will qualify from the semifinals. I think that was some of the main reasons why they splitted it up in two semifinals. I never actually liked that top-10 idea. I don't know why you deserve a final place (except the winnar ofcourse) in the next edition, when you are in the top 10. They can send the most awful songs in despite of countries who are stuck in the semifinal with maybe a much better song.

Croatia not taking part wasn't a huge surprise, but it's indeed very sad.

Agreed. I think that the top ten idea qualifying could be good though, as it would make it more interesting to see the results, and the countries that finish top ten and really want to win will try to do a even better work for victory considering they know they're already in the final.
The thing is the part I bolded happened in 2006. Almost all pre-qualified countries sent horrible songs which decreased the quality of the final a lot. And almost all of them finished in the bottom 10.
