It is when you sell over a certain amount then you get gold, platinum etc.
Platinum you get for the highest amount of sales.

Usually gold means 1/2 of platinum sales.

In USA the platinum disc award goes for performers who sell 1 000 000 copies of their record (single, or album), gold for 500 000 copies.

btw, the UK is the only country with "silver". For singles:
200 000 copies - silver
400 000 copies - gold
600 000 copies - platinum

For albums:
60 000 - silver
100 000 - gold
300 000 - platinum

so for instance, if Oasis sold 900 000 copies of their single - this single is platinum.

Every country has its own scale. If gold means 400 000 copies in the UK, in Norway it's 5 000 sold copies.


Some countries, like USA for instance, have diamond certification (mainly for albums and not for singles, 10 000 000 copies for USA, 1 000 000 for Japan, 500 000 for Ukraine)

Lena's "Satellite" is only the 5th ESC winning song which reached #1 on the European chart, and first in 28 years:
