So, uh, lots of little things turned into one big blob of procrastination here, I suppose. Family time around the holiday season, more hours at my first proper job, Eurovision season kicking off, a little WV burnout and all sorts of other stuff kind of mashed together, and I maaaay be approximately four editions late in updating this thread. But while we're here, I suppose it's time for a mini-retrospective on my last few editions
WV86 (SF2): Simple Plan – Perfect
Regular: 22/22 (17P) // REJU: 08/22 (53P) // Final: NQ
I figured I'd start my time in Canada with one of the first songs that got me into music – and so, with it being something I discovered much earlier than my usual WV fare, I always figured it'd be a risk. Clearly the song wasn't
quite "perfect" by the standards of WV voters, earning me what is (off the top of my head) my first proper wooden spoon at the contest. Hey, at least it achieved something!
I wasn't too shocked to see this one flop, as it felt a little bit outside of what WV typically votes for, but I'm still happy to have sent it. The REJU votes salvaged things a bit too – clearly a rather unlucky draw played a factor here, as I got a decent 8th place with REJU voters! Not that I can blame the semi allocations too much, though, as with those scores I would've needed virtually a perfect draw to ever make it through. Nonetheless, onto the next edition!
WV87 (SF1): Jordan Leibel – I Built All My Friends Out Of Scrap Metal
Regular: 20/29 (41P) // REJU: 11/29 (30P) // Final: NQ
Shaking things up a little, I went with a new discovery for my second edition in Canada: a beautifully atmospheric and minimalist piano piece I'd found while searching for possible entries. Again, the lower results here were about what I'd expected: it's not the sort of song that shouts "successful WV results", but I was glad to send it regardless. Side note: I've found something rather along the lines of this piece for Japan while I've been gone, so when I eventually make my way back to the country or one of its regions, expect a little more flop-tastic atmospheric piano like this!
WV88 (SF1): Blue Sky Miners – Cold Water
Regular: 27/29 (28P) // REJU: 17/29 (25P) // Final: NQ
After a couple of flops, I figured I'd go with what seemed like one of my big hitters: a uniquely interesting folk song that I'd managed to win an WV spinoff with some time prior. My bad luck continued, though, and what was once a winner became third-last in the semi. I hadn't expected to win WV itself with this, of course, but a miss of that magnitude was certainly a little less than what I'd been hoping for.
Whether it was the larger field of songs, a higher average quality or just a hugely different set of voters, I don't quite know; it was a mix of all three, probably. Either way, I figured I just had to move on, and decided to do so with what would be my favourite entry I'd sent from Canada yet...
WV89 (SF2): NicolAmarfi – Painful History
Regular: 11/30 (68P) // REJU: 05/29 (36P) // Final: 12/27 (134P)
...and finally, I tasted success as Canada for the first time! I was thrilled to finally make the final here, and with my best result in 17 editions at that (and not that 12th is bad, but wow, for that to be my highest result in that many editions... I've been on a bit of a flop streak, haven't I
). A little ironic, I suppose, that I've taken a holiday from Japan to Canada and my best-scoring entry here to date is... from the soundtrack of
a visual novel with heavy Japanese influences. You can take the Zobo out of the Japan, but you can't take the Japan out of the Zobo!
Whatever the case may be, I reached the final in my fourth edition here, and couldn't have chosen a better song to do it with – it's my favourite of the four I've sent from the region and it's something I've wanted to send to WV since first joining, so in a sense the previous three NQs are all worthwhile if that's what it took to get the decent result for this one.
Thanks to all those who got me over the line this time around – I won't name everyone as I usually would, since this post is already getting rather long and I'm tired, but I'll give a shoutout to
for those beautiful unexpected 12s in the final, and to
for the 10s. With Japan in particular, it was nice to have a little 12 points-exchange with esc87fan for the first time since our region swap – just made it feel all the better! And now, for WV90...
