I think the problem with bones, or at least for me was that it felt so artificial and try hard. These hashed up groups for Eurovision very rarely work out, and the entire performance just lacked any soul or sincerity. The result it got was more than fair imo.

To be fair, to me as well - many songs feel artificial and trying too hard every year :?
Sure staging let this down and I might sound like a bitter bitch but this was a gem of a song I hope we can see at Eurovision again and succeed

And I mean, usually the song that receives the composer award of the year or what it is called, does quite well with the juries but this «only» managed 10th place? :? and you can say what you feel about the merit of this song but i’m just pointing it out

Staging indeed looked so cheap for such an expensive sounding song. Those instagram effects cracked me up.
Manga gotta teach them how to channel a dark staging.
And the song didn't have an instant appeal to me. The more I heard it, the more I appreciated the overall structure of the song.

Bulgaria was giving me life last year with the way they acted like some kind of an evil mastermind; plotting and scheming how to conquer Eurovision. I loved how confident they were and Bones is a quality track, but seeing as it fared similar to Skeletons perhaps this genre just doesn't do all that great in the contest. Anyway, Bulgaria topped my ranking for 3 consecutive years and I really miss them this year.

I like «Bones» still more than all of the 2019 Songs. «Bones» will remain one of my all-time favorites. Every part of the song is great and If you think you heard the best part, an even stronger part comes on. A constant climax. And so many different layers.

But in the end it was too complex for a 3 min stage performance. Usually I dislike these kind of Eurovision supergroups. But Equinox did a good job. «Bones» wouldn't have worked with a single artist.

I never expected soul or sincerity from this performance. Everything was a construct (or framework ). It was more for the brain, than for the heart.

They say Eurovision doesn't fit the kind of programming BNT wants in the future. What the hell is up with this sudden change of mind? It really makes no sense.
Are they that annoyed at the 14th place "Bones" got? I mean, they were possibly the weakest country in Eurovision when it comest to results for a decade, they come back and finish twice in the top 4 and once in the midtable of the final, and that last result is enough for them to get all salty and withdraw? Or is there a new director or board on BNT that has some sort of weird political agenda, like what happened with Turkey?

I dunno about BNT precisely, but in Eastern Europe here the situation with esc is far from Portugal..when I saw "Telemoveis" reactions and how many ppl voted, commented FdC/ESC in Portugal I was WTF .. here nobody cares for this festival now.. xshrug

That, although I haven't really made my research on what exactly they are or their agenda.

That would be a shame if they were to leave for an extended period... They were doing so well as of late.

Such sad news. New Bulgaria could never quite seem to stay competitive and get me on board, but my "the more the merrier" is quite broad, and I appreciated their presence at Eurovision. One last

If new Bulgaria is to stay out for several years, then bring back good ol' Bulgaria. Problem solved.

What ? Why so many people are liking your post ? Equinox + Poli + Kristian (I wasn't his biggest fan but I must admit that his song was very very good) were all three better than everything Bulgaria had ever sent to the contest.

Sofi's power and fame are unlimited (like her love).

Since 2016, Bulgaria have gone international at all levels (musically, team-wise, even representative-wise with Equinox) and became very successful in the process. That's a fact.

However, whether that change was for the better or not may be subjective, especially on the musical aspect. Some people liked the often colourful and unpredictable acts Bulgaria used to send, even though the results were not good.

Personally, I think Poli's "If Love Was A Crime" was a fantastic effort and a good compromise: it had the international musical codes they wanted to go for, yet it retained a Bulgarian twist, so to speak. Since then though, their songs have lacked spice and identity imo.

I don't love everything Bulgaria have sent, but Kaffe, Elitsa & Stoyan, Deep Zone, Miro, and Sofi Marinova, to name a few, brought diversity to the contest and - IMO - weren't less deserving of support and recognition compared to the most recent Bulgarian acts.

:bg: 2005 and :bg: 2008 were some of the most underrated entries of all time for me. Especially the second one. I've seen it live during the semi in 2008 and it had such an awesome crowd reaction, I was sure it would qualify. Yet, sadly, it didn't :( It was also my #1 of the year.

Well that is your opinion. To me both eras are not comparable. Pre2016 Bulgaria felt a lot more authentic, fun and just all round a bit whacky. They sent stuff that sounded more Bulgarian instead of trying super hard to win, and many of it was enjoyable while also some of it not so much. Post2016 Bulgaria was a lot more stronger and serious when it came to the entries and you could see they really wanted to try and win. For me Kristian was well overrated and equinox was too desperate and try hard, but Poli was just so amazing, also with her 2011 entry. I think it's a shame they're doing a Turkey on us because they always brought something to the contest each year they took part.

Poli Genova was AMAZING but Kristian Kostov was overrated and probably even more than Salvador Sobral.
But i read somewhere that the reason they withdrew is bacause the new director BNT has since 2017 does not like Eurovision. I hope that not true because it will be terrible if a whole country stays out of Eurovision just because one man does not like it!

i REJECT the notion that there is an old bulgaria and a new bulgaria. bulgaria was amazing before, stayed amazing recently, and will be amazing again once BRT isn't so damn poor. it is the same country and the same brilliance.

also this is appropriation of latvian culture, the true country with a stark old/new divide.

Bulgaria went into the trap last year just hiring SJB to do the staging and not consider any other ideas than the ones she came up with / forced on EQUINOX
I am very sad with their 14th place... xcry
