Re: Countdown: 25 Amazing Facts about Countries Around the World (#25-#9)

Ohhh this picture brings back memories xheart

I've been to Monaco in 2009 when I was on a roadtrip with my sisters along the Côte d'Azur. It was one of the best trips evahh. Monaco was really beautiful!
The people weren't so friendly, though. They were a lot nicer in Cannes & Saint Tropez xrofl

Exactly! I liked Saint-Trop the most, but I thought it would be a lot different, more like in the Louis de Funes films, and Cannes is beautiful, although I didn't like it that much. There were expensive cars everywhere, I remember we posed with every expensive car we came across haha!

This is the joke Brits make for us Cypriots anyway! Even Cypriots who were born and grew up in the UK or elsewhere are always late! Once we were waiting for a British friend of us, and he was late. He came with a Cypriot, though, and everybody said "oh, he was with xxx, that's why he was late!" xrofl3

If we ever hang out, we'll be late x2

The stereotype says that all Southern European people have a relaxed sense of time. This includes: Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Portugal, Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries, mainly South America.

Although there are a number of small nations in the world that show no hint of having an agriculture based economy, (take Vatican City for example) Singapore is the largest of these urban city-states.

I read somewhere that in those countries it's perfectly normal to be late 30 minutes or so. And if you turn up on time, you'd be considered crazy xrofl2

and...last but I hope, not least (Croatia): :)

1) Croatia is on the 25 th place in Europe, by its area (56.542 sq km). Between 46 european countries, this puts us among the middle sized european countries. The number of inhabitants in around 4,2 millions, on 27 th place. (2011 est.). In the world frames, Croatia is 126 th.

2) Croatia is the proud owner of even eight national parks (it is pretty much if we compare it with our surface). Of that eight national parks, even five are located inland, more or less (Plitvice Lakes, Northern Velebit, Paklenica, Risnjak and Krka). Kornati islands, Mljet and Brijuni islands are on the Adriatic sea, however:). Plitvice Lakes are announced as a national park in 1949, and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.
Besides the national parks, we have many nature parks, which are situated in continental part (such as Lonjsko Polje, Kopački Rit, Medvednica, Papuk, Vransko jezero, Samoborsko Gorje etc). There are 444 protected areas of Croatia, encompassing 9% of the country.

3) A global cultural contribution from Croatia is the necktie, derived from the cravat originally worn by the 17th century Croatian mercenaries in France.

Although English is its official language, only 1-2% of the population actually speak it. As the most linguistically diverse country in the world, over 820 languages are spoken in Papua New Guinea or 12% of the world’s total.

Yeah, Canada is a country of lakes. I've been on lake Superior (the biggest lake in N. America, 2nd biggest in the world) and lake Ontario (which is like 20 minutes from here, where I type this ). I've also seen some much smaller lakes.

1. Canada

5. New Zealand

6. South Korea

7. United Kingdom

8. Finland

9. Australia

10. Ireland

Russia didn't make the top 10, let alone snatching that #1. Where did you see that? These websites are reporting OECD data.

http://www.oecd.org/edu/eag2012 (eng)--Ebook (FINAL 11 09 2012).pdf official report page 36. Basically I guess that your articles counted the world = OECD members. And like the official OECD paper shows Russia beats out all OECD members.

The report is kinda confusing. Aren't those numbers from 2010, anyway?

Well, Canada is currently the most educated country worldwide, in 2012.

If you look at the statistics then yes it is about 2010 because you have no newer statistics or anything to base on Canada being the most educated country. Eg if you look at the articles they actually use the very same report.
