Looks like two last places in a row have served enough purpose – German media has been reporting that ARD will increase the focus on the song, not the artist, in the 2017 national final.

Much like the casting show which proved so successful in 2010, ARD look to find a successful song and then match this to a performer who can deliver it effectively on the Eurovision stage, in a similar vein to the BBC’s approach in 2009. No other details have been given about format, duration or participation numbers in next year’s German national final.

Thomas Schreiber, head of the German Eurovision delegation, has stated that the “main goal in the future is to search for the ESC song, then the performers, then we take care of the production”, hinting at a revised-down artistic search.

After two last places in a row, a shake-up really will be vital for Germany next year. Who do you want to see singing for the Germans in 2017?

Stay tuned with ESC United for all of the latest Eurovision news over the summer and beyond!
