The ESC keeps getting surprises for me.
A few days ago a story blew me away. ESC 1984: The glamoures performance of Germany's Mary Roos.
34 years later, it turns out that it wasn't glamoures at all.
In a television show a few days ago, the now 69 year old Mary Roos is confronted with a video of her former performance.
Then it breaks out of her: "That was a catastrophic appearance".
It turns out that she has never watched her performance and sees it for the first time in 34 years, because it's connected to a very personal private tragedy.
Shortly before the performance, she receives a phone call from a woman who tells her she is her husband's girlfriend, that she is pregnant and now wants to see money,
otherwise she goes to the press and ruins her career (remember it was 1984)
It turns out that it is the truth and Mary Roos has been cheated by her husband who accompanied her that ESC evening. But now she has to go on the ESC stage and recite a song with the following lyrics:
Now we've said goodbye, I'm feeling so much better
Tryin 'not to cry, I'll make it on my own
I know it will not be easy but I've got faith in me
I'll make it through
I'll walk tall, I'll walk tall
I can make it alone, when I fall, I'll stand tall
My pride is out of my eyes, white tears run down my face
I'll walk through the night, I'm right
If you change your mind, you know, it just might happen
I'll be long since gone, 'cause waiting's not my style
If, by chance, we do meet you and your lips try to kiss
I'll be strong enough to tell it like it is
I'll walk tall, I'll walk tall
I can make it alone, when I fall, I'll stand tall
My pride is out of my eyes, white tears run down my face
I'll walk through the night, I'm right
The truth can sometimes taste so bitter
While I laugh inside, I'm hurting still
It's me picking up the pieces
I know that I can win, and when I want
I'll walk tall, I'll walk tall
I can make it alone, when I fall, I'll stand tall
My pride is out of my eyes, white tears run down my face
I'll walk through the night, I'm right
The literal translation of the German lyrics are even more painful than the English version.
Mary Roos said in the TV show, that during the whole performance she only thought she wished the three minutes were over right now and she could leave.
I guess, the longest 3 minutes of her life.
Without knowing the backstory, Rea Garvey has created an amazing version of her song that expresses
exactly the rage Mary Roos felt during her performance at the time and she wished to express back than.
Rea Garvey was a little shaken before his performance as he heared the story behind the song only seconds before.
With the version of Rea Garvey, I am now obsessed with. You may have to be patient because of the commercial before the song.
