I've been disappointed with some of the individual selections, but I'm pretty sure that's just an effect of me following national finals closely for the first time this year and disagreeing with the results - I'd probably have been the same any year if I'd have watched that. Leaving the national finals aside and looking at the songs themselves, I'm expecting an end level of quality somewhere around 2011 or 2013 - which is to say, a year with a lot of good, enjoyable songs but not many great ones (as opposed to, say, 2007 and 2009, which for me had a few really amazing songs alongside piles of drab nothing entries).

Plus, as other people have mentioned, a lot of the usual powerhouse countries are yet to choose, and there are some usually-weak ones with upcoming selections that sound interesting. Germany, Sweden and Norway have some great songs between them, Montenegro, Armenia and Georgia sound promising from what we've heard, there are good rumours from the UK, and then we've got San Marino, Russia, Greece and Azerbaijan... it's far too early to despair, I think.

I disagree with you all.
It as bad year with few countries competing.
Eurovision is dying.
Can't you see it ?

Oh gosh, this is the same story every year.....

Anyway, I think this year is gonna be slightly better than the previous ones. After amazing editions from 2007 to 2010, since 2011 the quality has been decreasing. It looks Eurovision will kinad recover this year :D

If you are close-minded and afraid of different genres, then yes, this is a weak year.

If you think everyone else who does not agree with you is close-minded, then you are the close-minded here ;)

I love different genres but generic songs are never that great, doesn't matter what the genre is.

I'm hoping the live performances are interesting.

There is a long way to go yet and I'm sure we will see some refining for the songs that will improve things. I'm sure we all remember the improvement of the Belgian entry from 2013 for instance.

I'm not saying this is the worst year ever, or that ESC is dying. Merely saying that so far nothing has stood out as being exceptional for me.

I am in agreement with lonter and several others. It comes down to personal taste. This may be one if the more diverse eurovisions we had in recent years. There are only two songs I cannot stomach. Everything else I have at least some form of appreciation for.

I haven't said anything about people agreeing with me. It just seems that everything this year that isn't a ballad or mainstream pop is a 'joke entry' to this forum and it's really sad.

Your words were: If you are close-minded and afraid of different genres, then yes, this is a weak year.

I don't think this is a especially weak year. But I will never say that people who find it weak are close-minded xshrug

And where did I specifically say that I think the people who don't agree with me are close minded?

I find the people who dismiss everything as a joke entry without giving it a chance to be close-minded. I don't care if you like the song or not but you should respect the genre.

You are calling close-minded to those who think this is a weak edition, so I guess you think this is not a weak edition, ergo you are calling close-minded to those who don't agree with you.

If you want to clarify, okay then, but that's what you said ;)
