Anyone else thinking that the songs released so far have been far less exciting than previous years? None of the songs so far make me want to put them on repeat.

I agree. Only a couple of songs I really like and the rest........sadly, I have a feeling that the quality of Eurovision entries is degrading each and every year :(

When we learned that only 37 countries will compete this year,
we all thought "oh never mind, quality is more important thing in the contest "
But what is happening is a disaster ! Neither many countries or good songs.

If you are close-minded and afraid of different genres, then yes, this is a weak year.

I've been doing this for too long...this claim comes up every single year. The last few years have been especially bad with those "it's the worst year ever" claims. Once all songs are chosen people will change their minds....it's just another deja vu.

btw I think Eurovision just gets better and better after the dark early/mid 2000s
Some years will be weaker than others but that's just natural xshrug

I dont agree at all. oOX I think this year is once again quite strong. First of all, we dont even know more than 18 songs, so we can expect to have big surprises. Its funny because last year the same rumors about "The worst eurovision" appeared, this year its again the case. NONONONO I honestly like this year: We have very strong songs including countires that didnt do so well the past years (FYR Macedonia, Ireland, Israel). Its going to be interesting for sure, I believe. Just get used to some songs, I thought the same before, but now most of the songs grow on me. Its not going to be a bad year, atleast we dont have an obvious winner, so its going to be full of suspense !!! xcheers

The thing with the ESC is that you always have a "general" feeling about the songs, where all the songs gather in your mind and you try to make a synthesis of it, and then your opinion on each individual number.

Since 2009, when I started watching the ESC closely, 2013 is the only year I thought was "weak". Proof being that I wasn't very satisfied with my personal top 10 and could have switched many of the songs from the top spot (I finally settled on Moldavia). However, if taken individually there were loads of good songs in ESC 2013: Moldavia, Ukraine, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Hungary, Iceland, etc. It's only all the songs taken together that I found weak.

2014 I think is turning out to be a pretty decent year and many traditionally strong countries have yet to select their entry (the three Scandinavians, Greece, Cyprus, Germany as of late has become an excellent ESC country, Azerbaijan). So I'm pretty optimistic actually.

I agree. Last year, reached this point, there were more interesting entries chosen. Let's wait for the rest of them...

I think this year has been fantastic so far. There's been so many non-traditionally ESC songs chosen and there's a healthy diversity of the entries. 2012 was a year dominated by ballads and Loreen, 2013 was a year dominated by female singers. This year there's no obvious frontrunner so far, and there's something for everyone. I'm sure Sweden/Denmark/Norway/Azerbaijan will do their best to ruin this diversity, but for now, 2014 is a rocking year.

People say this every single year . It's a matter of personal taste after all.

I personally find this year to be decent so far. I'm generally satisfied with the songs chosen.

Do I have to repeat that the juries are back...

We definitely see a decline in everything that made this contest interesting since they came back (native languages, ethnic entries, different stuff)... no further comments on that but there's definitely a correlation with the decline and juries comeback. People just open your eyes, it was the same (if worse) when they had complete control over the outcome... tragically dated and most things "non-conventional" or "different" was flopping back then just as now...

well, maybe this is a annual whining bandwagon but the fact remains:
- in 2007, 2010, 2012 and even 2013 i was following all songs as they came out and i loved them at first just as i love them now
- in 2008, 2009 and 2011 i was following all songs as they came out and i wasn't thrilled then as i am not thrilled now
(those years are there cause about then i started to follow esc from nf's)

u can say it's a matter of taste (and ofc it is), u can say it's a matter of my mood (could be ), but this esc is weak (so far) for me xshrug
