I think the BIG 5 themselves will want to compete in the semi-finals and this will happen sooner rather than later. It's just that after the semis most people already have their favourites and it's very hard for big 5 to compete against that natural obstacle of their pre-qualification for the final. And being directly in the finals means also that they have less rehearsals on stage, less time to adjust the things.

I agree. We can even skip this "fair game" and "deserved special treatment" discussion. If the big 5 want to win (or avoid humiliating results), they'll need to compete in the semis on the same conditions as everybody else.

Also, if any one or all of them chose to withdraw from Eurovision, they'll still fund the EBU at the same level. It wouldn't effect Eurovision financially at all. Spiritually for the contest, it would of course be a catastrophe.

What? But if they withdrew they will still be paying?

No. But since they are automatically qualified for the final, they must bloody well make sure they send something of worthy and not some weird campy stache-song. Shame on you, France! The Big-Five should always send quality songs no matter what. On the whole, it's meant to be a surprise, to fill out the field for the better, not for the worse.

France has nothing to be ashamed of. Not this year, anyway. Moustache was extremely underrated.

The show should be 1 hour longer with everyone participating in the final.

The big 5 do not pay for Eurovision.

really? than why "big 5" ?
why those 5 countries are being treated differently and the others like a "second class citizen" ?
(you have to prove first you are worthy for an Eurovision final, while "big5" just buy their place in the final, or I though that until now, I though they give more money)

The Big 5 pay the highest share and without their funding I can't see the contest existing anymore

If the Big 5 are disbanded and made to compete in semi's then why should they continue to pay that high share of fees?

but how much is the fee for each country and how much for those 5?
why they not pay like the others?

It's ironic. Eurovision promotes tolerance and non-discrimination, but at the same time , EBU do favoritism when some countries qualify directly into the final. Anyway, I'm not interested too much on this issue, if they don’t want to compete with the others in the semifinals, if they're afraid of a possible defeat, it's their problem. You never lose even in defeat. Losing a battle just motivate you to find a new way to win the war. They will never know that

Sorry, but you're wrong. If you cared to read the earlier posts you'd understand. The UK is probably a major funder of the EBU as a whole, but that money is not being poured into Eurovision in any significant way. As I said earlier, I calculated 95% of Eurovision Malmö was financed by SVT and local Scanian inst with total Eurovision 2013 budget of EUR 14 million, a budget that was published in public.

Is that why the hosts say before every Eurovision the Big 5 pay the most towards the competition?

Maybe in UK tabloid commentaries. :D No, seriously if say San Marino wins Eurovision there must be some support plan. Maybe the EBU contribution is progressively calculated in some way? In the case of Malmö it was peanuts and I guess the same goes for Copenhagen. No information is shared in public regarding these things (what I know of).

I don't know exactly how much is the fee (I think it's 130,000 Euros) , but I was expecting Romania to not participate this year, considering the public broadcaster has huge debts.

Probably the big 5 pay more than 130,000 EUR each.

The UK spent £310,000 on Eurovision 2012, not sure what that is in euros!

Thats what I think, they should perform in the semi they're voting in. Either as the interval acts or after the qualifications.

Yes,last year i read that each spanish entry cost around 300.000 euros and yesterday my boyfriend told me that France pays 500000 euros each year, how many pay San Marino? :p
