Since TVR did not broadcast the 2024 edition, can we come back in 2025? I remember Kazakhstan couldn't apply at some point because they did not broadcast the previous edition. Was that just EBU bullshit or I am misremembering?

@Gera11, the rule existed back in 1990s/early 2000s, when as "passive participant" you had to broadcast contest and pay 50% of fee to participate next year. Nowadays, Italy didn't broadcast ESC 2010, Poland in 2013 as well :)

Sorry don't know where to put it but can some Romanians here help me please:

By accident I picked up some Eastern European music TV channels on my satelite way back (Feny, Taraf, Veselina etc) and was quite hooked on some of the songs, and still listen to Denisa, Florin Peste, Florin Salam, Diana, Laura etc.

Just curious who these people are and if they are well known, or if this 'manele' music is just fringe. Are they Romani? The thin, piping female voice and a deep male combo sounds very Indian. Florin Peste even looks Indian.

Were any of these artists ever considered for Eurovision?

An example:

Yes, manele is a Turkish-derived genre performed mostly by Romani musicians. They are very well known, they're constantly trending on YouTube and are performed at weddings, birthdays, baptism parties etc. That said, the general opinion is somewhat similar with the one shared by the Spaniards when it comes to reggaeton. Manele songs are viewed as uncultured and of poor taste (coupled with a smidge of racism, let's be real).

As an example of the general audience's reaction, back in June, Coldplay performed in Bucharest for their The Music of the Spheres World Tour and as an interval act they invited a rising Manele star who was trending #1 on YouTube called Babasha. When Babasha started singing on the stage, part of the audience began to whistle loudly while another part applauded. However, by the time his moment ended, the crowd booed loudly.

Wedding singers? I would have thought they were top selling stars and doing concerts with that quality. I'm really surprised as the melodies, production and singing is really top notch and quite accessible to where even a northerner like me can get well into it.

With the production of these, Inna, Alexandra Stan and others you'd think Romania would be such a powerhouse of European music (at least East European), but most years it can hardly muster an average song for Eurovision which is a bit bizarre.

Nobody wants to work with TVR, that's why. You have to compromise your image, career, vision etc. to work with some communist era dinosaurs who are still living (in their mind) in the golden age of 2005.

A shame with bossy dinosaurs in charge, but you'd think these manele artist would be happy with anything if all they get are weddings etc, or are they simply not even considered?

They would not be considered, I can already image the reaction of the average Joe if we send a manele singer

Do we think Romania will be back in 2025?

Romanian fans have been suffering in the last few years with sub-standard live performances and a broadcaster that seemingly doesn’t care anymore, so much so that they didn’t even broadcast this year’s edition despite being able to if they wished.

In my view, a shakeup is needed of the Eurovision team at TVR if Romania are to return and make a success of it.

I'd love to see Paula back, she's such a nice person irl. But only if TVR changes their ways tbh

TBPF, I found her voice a bit naggy to their pop entries before, but here it was superb so maybe a ballad or something.

I mean what about a song like this? How do you think it would fare?

^^ I don't think so, tbh.

It's still better for us fans to see a country's debating on Eurovision and if they can/want to participate instead of broadcasters simply saying "no" between May and September.

There might be a slight chance to see Romania back soon (unlike Hungary or Turkey, for example).

Actually, the EBU gave Romania some extra time last year which was quite unusual... I think that only let Slovenia do this before back in 2014?
